Dennis's Story

Life After 20+ years in the Navy I retired and stayed in Southern California. I've retired from my second career working for a major government defense contractor using the knowledge and information I gained and used in the Navy, C4I systems. When I was in the Navy, we called officers "Sir". As an enlisted, if anyone called us sir, we would rebuff them with "Don't call me sir, I work for a living". This thought sticks with you after being out of the Navy. I didn't have many people call me sir for the first 10 years after being out. But, as time has gone by, more often than not someone is calling me sir. I no longer rebuff the title, but it's hard to not want to say something sometimes, especially when you work with those who were in the Marine Corp, they almost always call me "Sir". As far as the Marines doing so, it's just a part of their discipline, and you learn to live with it. The Navy allowed me to travel half way around the world a couple times. Between my wife and I, we have been on every continent except Antarctica. I married late in life some would say, age 36. My wife and I have no kids. This only means we supported nephews and nieces i...Expand for more
n their education endeavors however. In some ways this, too, has its moments of pride as well as disappointments. The particular "job" I had in the Navy kept me at sea quite a bit, even when I was on shore duty. Because of the time at sea I didn't finish college until after I got out of the service. I did attend a Community College while in the Navy, but didn't complete the program until after I was out. Afterwards, I went to a non-traditional university, University of Phoenix, and received my Bachelors degree from the San Diego campus. There are things I would like to redo in life, and only wish I could relive those moments, but then don't we all. A few things I would not change: having joined the Navy, marrying my wife, and coming to realize Jesus is my savior. Looking back at Ganesha, there is one teacher whom I'll always remember, Zero Crabtree (math teacher). I no longer have my annuals (year books), they were lost in a storage garage foul-up, one of those decisions I'd like to un-do. Since I no longer have my year books, many of those who visit I will not be able to look up and see the way they were. I do remember the names of many though.
