Dennis's Story
I am currently the Mayor of Capitan, New Mexico. I still have 3 1/2 years to go on my first 4 year term.
Capitan is still like the old "wild west" We have about 2000 people that live in town plus a lot of ranchers that live in the valleys surrounding us. We are located in the Sacramento Mountains about an hour from the Mexican border. Everyone out here carries a gun as the gun laws are very easy to follow as long as you have a conceal-carry permit.
We have a lot of deer, elk and mountain lions here and hunting is big business for the locals ...Expand for more
in Lincoln County.
Approximately 12 miles to the east of us is the old town of Lincoln. That is where Billy the Kid and his group called the "Regulators" fought the Lincoln County War back in 1888 thru 1891. Billy was eventually shot down by his so-called friend Sheriff Pat Garrett. Some of the families are still fighting that war.
We live on the edge of the Mescalero Apache Indian Reservation which is huge. They have a casino called "The Inn of the Mountain Gods." They also conduct elk hunting parties for Anglos for about $1500.00 a season.
