Dennis's Story
Life
59-62 just hangin' out..62-65 US Army..65-67 just hangin' out, again!..67-85 Wayne Police Dept, fatal accident investigator, photographer, motorcycle officer-retired in '85 as result of an on the job motorcycle accident(an 81 yr old man "didn't see" my motorcycle.contrary to popular belief human beings can fly, not far, not high but they can fly!!!)..86 moved to Fla, hated it there, sooo flat, rude people..86 moved t' the mts. of NC, beautiful area t' ride motorcycles, was there i found out 'bout my in'din roots, am descended from the turtle clan of the Minisink Lenape(Delaware) Nation 'n my relatives are enrolled members of the Ramapough Mountain People. '93-present, moved to Porcupine, SD on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation-went to work at Red Cloud Indian School as a teacher aide and bus driver-teacher aide in 5th grade (8 yrs)taught Lakota language & culture (5 yrs)-'07 due to "spiritual politics" was let go from Red Cloud-Aug '07 went to work for Gordon/ Rushville(Neb.)Public Schools as their Indian Education Coordinator(Title VII)and teacher of Lakota culture & language plus councilor to Lakota students-still live in Porcupine & deeply immersed in Lakota Spirituality & live by the Lakota values (generosity, bravery, fortitude & respect)-it's a difficult life but a happy and most of all a very rewarding life.
In Jan. of this year (2009), Gordon/Rushville saw fit to "terminate my employment" under some pretty vague reasons, so I am enjoying being in the ranks of the unemployed. My life style,(being single(widowed)with my own place and virtually no bills), spiritual vs material, works quite well with unemployment. There are only two minor difficulties. Can't get use to being "all dressed up and no place to go" and I ain't ready to "go sit on the porch and watch the big dogs run", though it's kinda neat that I can sit on the porch and watch the grass grow!!! all in all, at 68 years old life is good!!!!
Thought i might add some new photos to my album, kinda to illustrate my "wanderings" over the years.I have been truly blessed to be able to travel and participate in many unique experiences. All the traveling and experiences have not come without consequences; haven't put down roots, nor have a family or a home, etc. It wasn't 'til 1993 when my last wandering lead me to the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. Here I found roots and family and the blessings attached to those two ideals.
So check out the photos. Hope you can get in touch with why I quote the line from a Beatles song; "what a long, strange trip it's been"! Hoka Hey!!!
PS-One thing i noticed in the i...Expand for more
nterests/Q&A section; Photography wasn't mentioned, and photography is one of my main interests.I guess I'm a frustrated artist, and I can't put on paper what my eyes see very well. but give a camera and I can create in a split second what an artist would take much time to create.
February '09 was "strongly suggested" that I retire, which reluctantly, i did. So in this last year and a half I've been trying to get use to being "all dressed up and no place to go". Spend most of my days now "sittin' on d' porch, watchin' d' grass grow" or d' snow melt depending on the season, playing on my computer, or being bored out of my skull. Ah, but this too shall pass. I have my health. I'm at Peace and Happy; AND I get t' tell my stories, to my "spoiled rotten" my neices 'n nephews, and anyone else who i can corral into listenin', 'n relive d' "back in d' day" with my old friends. Ah, yes it's all good!!!! Hau hecetu welo! Mitakuye O'yasin!
So 'cuse me, but there is some grass dat needs t' be watched growin'.
toksa, dennis
UPDATE (12/28/2010): In the above story (written in '08/'09) i said "Life is Good", well, now at the end of 2010, lookin' forword t' 2011, life is FANTASTIC!!!. Started teaching (part time) "Lakota Culture, Language,Crafts ; 'n Music" (with Century 21 After School Program) at Our Lady of Lourdes (K-8) school here in Porcupine; am back in the class room, workin' with "Kids", sharin' my knowledge; Yea, LIFE IS FANTASTIC!!
UPDATE: 4/09/2011: Wakinyan Oyate (Thunder Nation) are Dancin', House Lights are Flickerin; it's Spring Time on d' Rez !! . Winter. 2010-2011 has been most interesting !; 7 out of 8 week-ends we had ice/snow 'n sub zero temps--'n after a 5 day "weekend" of the ice/snow, sub zero temps there came 2 days o' 60/65 temps; result.....FLOOD!!!. my brother live 'bout 1/2 mile off the main road on a creek bed that hasn't seen water since 1993. Thankfully, my brother 'n my homes are set on high ground, so no water got in. Will say that the flood was beautifull t' photograph, but a total pain in the butt bein' stranded for a couple o' days...
UPDATE (11/5/2011): At the suggestion o' one o' my ol' classmates 'n dear friend,Joyce Gregory, i am writin' a book; "What a Long Strange Trip it's Been~The People, Places 'n Events Stories"; 'n will be 'bout my "somewhat unconventional" life (so far!); 'n will include stories o' growing up, high school, army, police, biker life, spiritual, 'n school teacher experiences. Will attempt to sart a new album with some o' the chapters. I say THANK YOU for the "idea" which has turned into a full blown "obsession"..lol
