Made my first trip to the Mediterranean fall of that year. It was a NATO exercise in Turkey. We got our first liberty in Naples. Italy. Our second was in Palma Majorca, Spain. I loved Palma. On a sad note, the deployment got better after I quit getting sea sick. Got home in time for Christmas. The Marine Corps gave me a present, got a phone call telling me when I got back, I had orders for MAG-36 on the island of Okinawa. January 1972 back to MCAS(H) New River...Expand for more
, packed my bags said my goodbyes, an off to the wonderful. Orient. My new home HMM-164. This is where I earned my aircrew wings and became a Crew chief in the CH-46. YT-13 my first aircraft BuNu 154812, In Oki there were two CH-46 squadrons on the island. HMM-165 and us HMM-164. 165 was on the boat when I arrived they were supposed to be out for 6 months, then it was our turn. Our Commanding Officer LtCol. Hertzburg must have had a crystal ball as to what was going to happen. He broke regulations.() The only people authorized to seat in the front seats are pilots. Only Officers are Pilots.) He had all the Crew Chief taught how to Take off and Land the Helicopter. .Some of us were better than others. By April we were on the boat heading to Viet-nam. 165 was already there. Mid May we were flying Combat Operation.
