Dennis's Story

Dennis Matthies The ten years following Tosa West were spent in furthering my education; first at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and then at Princeton University. These studies led to a PhD in physics. Later I attended the MIT Sloan School of Business to study the management of innovation and technology. I married Judy Keen from Princeton in 1970. We were blessed with a son and a daughter. Both children followed my example and dragged their college education out for 10 years. Our son got his MBA from Wharton and works for Bloomberg in the NYC office. He commutes by ferry from his home in NJ where he lives with his wife and two children who are 6 and 8. Our daughter got her masters in speech pathology and lives with her husband and three children 6, 8 and 19 in Tampa FL. We see the grand children regularly and take an extended family reunion trip together every year. My career began at RCA Laboratories in Princeton NJ where I spent 45 years doing hundreds of interesting projects. I had no career plan but thought that inventing gadgets for James Bond and winning a Nobel Prize would be cool. I developed RCA’s VideoDisc product, which was the precursor to DVDs. I also was at the leading edge of developing projection, LCD, plasma, 3D and OLED TVs. Other projects led to the large displays used at sports stadiums and Times Square. I worked with GE Medical in Waukesha to develop the high resolution CAT Scan product. I worked on James Bond like toys for the intelligence agencies to help collect and exploit video information. rone video was applied first in Bosnia and continues to the present day. I created the ground stations that were used for perimeter defense around every military base in Iraq and Afghanistan. These stations kept our soldiers safe by giving them eyes on everything that moved around them. I also developed the airborne IED detection system that was used to keep soldiers safe. The Nobe I retired in June of 2013. My top priority retirement activity is to spend time with my grandchildren and help my children out. The rest of my time is divided between walking on the beaches, doing volunteer work for my church, reading and dancing. I helped start the Princeton Student Tango club in 1998 and I have been dancing with the students in the club since then. While my dancing talent is modest, I have had the opportunity to dance with many world champions and stars from movie, TV and tango shows. After retiring we sold our Princeton home. We had a summer home in Ocean Grove NJ for the past 30 years which is now our permanent summer residence. Our son and his grand children live nearby. The home overlooks the ocean and the famous Victorian architecture of Ocean Grove. Fodor listed Ocean Grove as the top US Beach location and #8 in the world for 2014. We also purchased a condo overlooking Lido Beach in Sarasota FL. The condo is located 3 blocks from Armands Circle and just over the bridge from downtown Sarasota which has a wide range of cultural and entertainment events. This condo is our winter residence is located an hour from our daughter and grandchildren.
