Dennis's Story
Life
After graduating from Thousand Oaks High School in 1968, I continued my education and stole a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Redlands. My Draft number, being in the low 60s, caused me to join the California Air National Guard / Air Force Reserve out of the 146th Tactical Airlift Wing, Van Nuys, California. I was not the only TO person in the unit. I was joined by Keith Hughes, Kurt Russell, and others I canÂt recall. When this enlistment was up I transferred over to Coast Guard Reserve. I worked on a 41' search and rescue boat out of the Channel Island area. I was a Federal Boarding Officer and spent six years as a Special Agent assigned to the Coast Guards Intelligence and Law Enforcement Branch.
While going to school I worked as an Emergency Medical Technician with Pruner ambulance service, which covered Thousand Oaks, Simi Valley, Agoura Calabasas and Malibu. Fun job with lots of memories, good and bad. I recall picking up one of our classmates, Lynn Despain, who was fatally injured on his motorcycle on Hwy 23.
I retired from the California Highway Patrol after 31 years. I spent half of my career in Ventura working in Thousand Oaks area. Had the opportunity in stopping some of our teachers, should have wrote Ms Warkentein (she gave ...Expand for more
me an F in English) a ticket but I was in a hurry to the donut shop. Mr. Barney, Merrill, Loretta and Nathanson either saw the light of my flashlight or I got their signature. The last half of my career was up around Yosemite near Bass Lake.
I have been involved in many local community activities. I have been involved with the Coarsegold 4H club and Yosemite High SchoolÂs FFA program serving as President of the Booster Club. I helped create the Eastern Madera County Junior Livestock Committee and served as its President for many years. I was a member of the Coarsegold Round-up Assn. and Coarsegold Rodeo Committee for many years and served as its President from 1994 to 1997. I am currently a member and Past President of Sierra Sunrise Rotary Club.
Currently I serve as President of Sierra Ambulance Service, Board of Directors. I served as Oakhurst ÂHonorary Mayor in 1999 and was honored as the community ÂOutstanding Man of the Year in 2000Â.
I married my high school sweetheart Patty McKee Have a son, Brandon, and daughter Cari and five grand children. Both Patty and I work for our son, Brandon, in Real Estate. He owns a brokerage here in Coarsegold. In my spare time I run a cattle operation and volunteer on the Madera County Search & Rescue team.
