Dennis's Story

High School: I wasn't popular and that was OK. My girlfriend went to another school. I was involved in a lot of other things. Most people wouldn't remember me much, if at all. I graduated in 1967. May of '68 I avoided the draft by enlisting in the Army. That sure surprised a lot of people. In December I shipped out to... nope, not Vietnam. My new duty station was at Kagnew Station, an army post located at Asmara, Ethiopia. Another huge surprise. Before the end of '69 there came yet another whopper. I was paralyzed. All I could move were my eyes and my tongue. Lots of surprises for the next few months until I managed to top it all by going back to active duty. By this time nothing could surprise me very much. I served honorable with distinction. Surprise, surprise. I didn't do any of the sterotypical things every veteran of that era got branded with. I remember being met by a guy from the State Dept who said he was glad I wasn't in uniform because it would make it easier to get clear of the airport. Welcome Home. I got out of the Army after my 3 years were up. I didn't run home and get married to my highschool sweetheart. She gotten married why I was still abed in Germany. So then what? I did the regular stuff most of us do. Well, I got married more than once and got divorced nearly as many times. I look back on it now an realize I was making sure there wouldn't be any more of that losing my girl becuase I didn't marry her fast enough. During that same time frame I got to spend time in a couple VA hospitals. Seems I had some medical issues to deal with. Curiously there were no records available for the time I'd spent lazing around as a tetraplegic...Expand for more
. I went to college for a while. Did great. This was in California. Went back to Texas (yeah, there's a lot omitted. I think the max. length here is 5000 charascters. Whoops, I just wasted over 100). It's now 1977. I'm a plant manager. An employee asks me if he can borrow my truck. I tell him that unfortunately I don't like loaning out my truck so where do I show up? We got his mom moved OK. I briefly met his 3 sisters. A week later he and I are invited to his oldest sister's place for a 'thank you' dinner for helping get her mom moved. I was immediately struck with the notion that this woman was different than those I'd shared rings with in the past. She didn't seem to need repair. Now that's not to say I didn't need fixing myself through those bye-gone years. Truth be told, I was nervous about moving too fast yet I instinctively knew she was who I really needed In My Life. She was more nervous than I. No one was more nervous that her mother! I finally convinced Diane to say those simple little word I'd been waiting to hear. In December of 1977 we were wed. There were more (many many more) medicals 'issues' to deal with but I simply must jump to the present for now. What? Don't think I can stop? Well, there's so much more to tell. OK, back to jumping ahead. In December of 2009, we celebrated our 32nd anniversary. Her mom quit being worried for her oldest daughter years and years ago. I've accepted not working anymore. Diane retired from teaching back in 2000. We share our life together. We are happy. I am blessed. I have a body that I fully expected would quit on me 3 decades ago. There are new 'surprises' all the time. Until next time...
