Dennis's Story

2021 Update... Yep, still here on the right side of life. At this ripe old age, and after living in Colorado for 34 years, we took advantage of the limited housing in Colorado and sold out at an obscene price. Since both kids ended up in South Carolina and my only family are some cousins elsewhere with whom I lost contact, we moved back to Lexington, South Carolina where we met and married 44 years ago. Downsized to a three-bedroom, 2200 sq ft new house (hopefully no repairs) and comes with yard maintenance - YAY! Still unpacking but thoroughly enjoying the people and surroundings. Retired from my Board position and planning to still do some occasional writing. Took us a while to purge and renovate the old Colorado house but the purging will make it easier for the kids when we kick the bucket. After dry Colorado, I am looking forward to some fishing and boating on the adjacent river and nearby lake. 2016 Update for my friends... got another granddaughter in 2014! Yippee! Lives in Charleston, SC too. Bummer! Still in Colorado Springs, CO for the time being. Wifey (42 years - wow!) is making noises about not seeing grandkids enough... who knows where next? Change keeps life interesting. Like I said earlier, I like to work and keep busy... went back to work as one of the local water district's board directors, got reelected, and now am Board Secretary/Treasurer. Doing a little writing again too. Dang doctor says I'll make it to 90, that's a whole lot of time to do something. 8/2013 Sold my business and got my overdue back operation finally. After enjoying some downtime and realizing they were going to start sending those social security checks in November whether I worked or not, I am thinking why bother? Feeling good now. Raised my best crop of tomatoes yet - quite a feat at 7000' and the coolest summer on record. Ah, that global warming. Wait I think the trout are jumping. ... 8/2012 Yahoo! Got me the cutest little Princes Praline granddaughter. :>))))) But, she lives in Charleston, SC :>((((. Went to State, dropped out, joined the AF to avoid the draft. Great timing, '65-'68, but I got to keep the electronics working in an airplane and luckily didn't slosh around in the jungle. Got out ...Expand for more
and worked as a tech until I got motivated to finish my engineering degree. Graduated in '73 and left Calif and the crowds behind. Worked for years as a systems and IC designer and went into high-tech marketing and upper management after getting my MBA. In my second or nth career, I ran my own shipping company for something to do. Along the way, I have lived in every corner of the country and some places in between. Been in Colorado Springs for the last 30+ years. Most importantly, I married a wonderful woman in Columbia, SC, and we have been together since 1976. 38 years and still on my first marriage! We have raised a boy and girl and they are now an engineer and an OR charge nurse. Most interesting and gratifying things I have done was starting the Brevard County Zoo in Florida. It is now the largest volunteer-run zoo in the country and over a million people have visited it. The local schools have incorporated it into their curriculum and about 5000 kids go through their programs annually. The other fun thing was taking a Boy Scout Troop that was down to 9 boys and building it up to almost 60 boys. It is now one of the leading Troops in the Council with about 90 boys in it. It is great to see boys on the verge of 'bad' turning into responsible community leaders after they grow up. I am on LinkedIn (Dennis Snyder of Colorado Springs) ... STORY WIZARD I always wanted to be a scientist when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a good idea. As it turns out, they were right. I actually enjoy working... tried not working - not nearly as much fun. When I am not working I love being in the mountains or exploring old towns in the mountains. If I could improve my home, I'd remodel the kitchen and add on nothing. My dream home would be in Estes Park.. Don't believe everything your kids tell you. My intuition was right more often than wrong. If I won $100 million, I'd give part of it to Christian outreach, then spend the rest on my wife, kids, and taxes.. I was from Lakeside and worked my way through school, who had time for those fraternities and other stuff? My current age is 74. When I was 12, I thought that people my age now would be really old. I was so completely right..
