•BIO: D. Anthony Miles (Derek Miles), is a millionaire serial entrepreneur, award-winning researcher, award-winning statistician, award-winning professor, legal expert witness, nationally-syndicated radio talk show host and best-selling author. He is CEO and Founder, of Miles Development Industries Corporation®, a consulting practice and venture capital firm. Dr. Miles is a nationally known startup and marketing expert. He is also a forensic marketing expert. He is a self-made millionaire and he reached it by the age of 57. He has presented his applied statistics research around the country most notably at Stanford University. He was invited to Harvard University by the Harvard Business School (HBS). •MEDIA APPEARANCES: He is a nationally-known business expert in the media. He has done over 100 media interviews as a subject matter expert. He has been featured on nationally syndicated media such as a subject matter expert for: ABC News, CBS News, Fox News, NBC News, CNN, Huffington Post, Forbes, Reader’s Digest, San Antonio Business Journal, KDAF TV News show in Dallas, Bloomberg Radio, Blog Talk Radio, WGN Radio in Chicago, iHeart Radio, AM/FM Radio, and numerous others. He is a member of the American Statistical Association (ASA), promoting the practice and profession of statistics. He was one of 12 Black statisticians in America that were honored for Black History Month in the February 2023 feature issue of AmStatNews, the membership magazine of the American Statistical Association (ASA). He is a active and recurring legal expert witness with the ForensisGroup , an expert witness database. He provides expert testimony on cases dealing with marketing, marketing research, business scams, false advertising claims and trade dress. He provides expert testimony for local, state and federal cases; and both civil and criminal cases. One notable case, he was asked to be an expert witness with the Byron Allen lawsuit against McDonald’s for discrimination in advertising against one of his companies. •BOOKS AND LITERARY WORK: He is an author and researcher that is well published in numerous academic journals. He is also a textbook author. He is a five-time book author and best-selling author. His fifth latest book is a textbook he co-authored with Dr. Phillip Adu is “Dissertation Research Methods: A Step-by-Step Guide to Writing Up Your Research in the Social Sciences” (2023). Published by Taylor and Frances. This is a textbook used in university doctoral programs around the country. His fourth and latest book is, “Confessions of A PhD: Tales of Success & Struggle in the Ivory Tower” (2023). Published with Dorrance Publishers. This book is a collection of memoirs from doctorate graduates and their experiences. He dedicated “Confessions of A PhD“ to his late doctoral student, Dr. Tonjalyn Ford of Sacramento, California. His third book, “How To Get Away With Murder in Marketing: Forensic Marketing” (2021) is a clinical book on forensic marketing investigation techniques. It is set to be another bestseller. He dedicated “How To Get Away With Murder in Marketing” (2021) to his late classmate and friend, Claudius “Heart Attack” Williams. His two previous books, “Risk Factors and Business Models” (2011) and “Entrepreneurship and Risk” (2011) were well received. BOOK INDUCTED INTO UNIVERSITY LIBRARY SPECIAL COLLECTIONS FOR HONORING ALUMNI AUTHORS: His third book, “How To Get Away With Murder in Marketing” was recently inducted in the Special Collections section at the Our Lady of the Lake University’s Sueltenfuss Library. It is a distinct honor and privilege to have alumni authors’ outstanding literary work showcased in their special collections section. His second book, “Risk Factors and Business Models” is cataloged at Stanford University ‘s research library. Stanford University is a Tier One research institution. Miles recently agreed to join the editorial review board for the Academy of Business Research’s new research journal, the “Journal of Data Analytics.” •DOCUMENTARY APPEARANCES AS A SUBJECT MATTER EXPERT: He has appeared in four documentaries as a subject matter expert. He has appeared in documentaries on business, business failures, startups, marketing, and fraudulent business ventures. Three documentaries he was in as a business subject expert will be released this year. He shot the documentaries in Atlanta, Georgia. He was a subject matter expert in a documentary and expose on multilevel marketing (MLM). Appeared on feature expose on MLM on CW33 KDAF Eye Opener TV News show in Dallas, Texas. He was a guest subject matter expert for the feature story. •CO-STARRED IN FEATURE FILMS AND MOVIES: He has co-starred and appeared in five feature films. He has appeared in five feature movies that were all shot in Atlanta, GA. •RESEARCH AWARDS AND OTHER AWARDS: He has won numerous awards for his applied statistics research in marketing and economics. He is now a 27-time award winner of the Academy of Business Research Conference’s (ABR) “Best Paper Award” in Marketing, Economics and Business. He has won the award consistently for over 11 years. In 2010 he won the “Student Recognition for Teaching Excellence Award” from the Texas A&M University System Board of Regents. While at Texas A&M University-San Antonio, he was one of the top 25% participating faculty in 11 universities in the A&M System. •FELLOWSHIP AWARD FOR DOCTORAL RESEARCH: In 2009, Miles won a fellowship with the United States Association for Small Business and Entrepreneurship (USASBE) Doctoral Consortium. He was selected as one of 17 distinguished doctoral researchers nationwide in the field of Entrepreneurship. He was one of the 17 award recipients that were flown to Anaheim, California to accept the award for fellowship. He won for his doctoral research on predictive analytics on entrepreneurial risk patterns that cause business failure with small businesses. Most notably, he set a record at the University of the Incarnate Word, for publishing the most peer-reviewed, academic journal articles from a dissertation study in the history of the university’s PhD program. He published 10 academic journal articles and two books from his doctoral research in entrepreneurship. He has a PhD/MBA from the University of the Incarnate Word (UIW); an MBA from Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU); and a BBA from the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA). •FAMILY BACKGROUND: He comes from a family of college graduates and famous athletes. Most notably, his grandfather was John ‘Mule’ Miles Jr., was a baseball legend, played professional baseball with the Negro Baseball League. He played with the Chicago Giants. He played with legends Satchel Paige, Josh Gibson, Cool Papa Bell and most notably, Jackie Robinson. He was inducted into the San Antonio Sports Hall of Fame. Topps, the sports card company honored him by doing a commemorative sports card on him. Another notable fact, he also worked as an aircraft mechanic for the famed “Tuskegee Airmen,” America's first black military air unit at the Tuskegee Institute. He was invited as a distinguished guest of President Barack Obama at his first inauguration. He was invited for being one of the surviving Tuskegee Airmen. During President Obama’s first Inauguration, he had the privilege of interviewed on Good Morning America with host Robin Roberts. His father, Winston C. Miles, was a standout athlete at the old Wheatley High School and St. Mary’s University. He is a legend at St. Marys University. He set a scoring record at St. Mary’s University, which was later broken by NBA legend, Robert Reid of the Houston Rockets.. His number 42,was retired and hangs in the rafters in the St. Mary’s Basketball arena. His father was later drafted by the Boston Celtics and Philadelphia 76ers of the National Basketball Association. He played against notable NBA Hall of Fame legends, Elgin Baylor and Zelmo Beatty. His late uncle and mentor, Ralph E. Miles, was a mathematician and statistician, and was listed in Marquis Who’s Who. His uncle is a graduate of UCLA and California State University. He was inducted into the Marquis Who’s Who in America for Science and Mathematics. Following the footsteps of his uncle, he was also inducted into the 2022 Marquis Who's Who's in America for economics and marketing. His youngest brother, Kevin Miles, was offered a tryout with the NFL franchise, Dallas Cowboys for a defensive lineman position. He chose to go to graduate school and compete his MA degree in Mental Health Counseling at Webster University. Thirdly, his two daughters are following in his footsteps. His oldest daughter, Alexis graduated from Xavier University with an MS in Speech Pathology and will be completing her internship for speech pathology and then will pursue a PhD in Speech Pathology. His youngest daughter, Cymone, also graduated Cum Laude with a BA in Chemical Engineering from Xavier University and was recently accepted at Georgia Institute of Technology (GIT). She won a full fellowship and all expenses paid doctoral program at GIT. She will be pursuing both an MS and PhD in Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering. She was one of the six students around the country to be selected for the ACS-Bridge program at GIT. They are following a legacy of educational achievement in the Miles Family. Lastly, his journey is very interesting within itself. Originally, he did not want to or plan to go to college. This was because a high school counselor at Sam Houston High School that advised him. The counselor told him he was not college material and should not go to college but learn a trade. So he never wanted to go to college. But, it was his father that MADE him go to college. He attended University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA). He put himself through college while he worked at a grocery store. That job paid his way through college. Thank God, he did not listen to the high school counselor at Sam Houston High School!
