Derek's Story

Hello everyone! A little blog of info for you... Graduated Mesa State College, Grand Junction Colorado in 1992 with a BA in Social Behavorial Sciences, emphasis in Criminal Justice. 1992 - Joined the Air Force as a Law Enforcement Specialist (now known as Security Forces). I have lived in Minot, North Dakota; Frankfurt and Geilenkirchen, Germany; and Albuquerque and Alamogordo, New Mexico. I ran into Amy Cooper and her Mom at Rhine-Main back in 1994/95. It was nice to see someone from back home. I am the proud father of triplets born in Mainz, Germany on September 10, 1995. The year of 1996 is not a good memory for me, my father passed away in early Februaury 1996 and, unfortunately, shortly therafter my eldest son passed away in late February 1996 at 6 mos. 2001 - I attended the Department of Defense Military Working Dog Handler School. I worked a patrol/explosive detector dog for four years. I was one of many dog teams to support the 2002 Winter and Special Olympics in Salt Lake City, Utah. I have conducted several Presidential support taskings with the US Secret Service and several Department of State Dignitary Protection Missions while DV's or their family members toured the US. In August of 2001 I was married. I had a son born in the Netherlands on Febuary 8 2001. A daughter on February 4 2003. On January 9, 2008 after seven yrs of marriage, I am now divorced. My ex-is also active duty AF and we have two children together; Hunter and Hailee. Unfortunately military life is tuff with one spouse employed by the armed services just imagine two. December 2002-June 2003: I deployed with my military working dog(MWD), "Blacky" in support of Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF), and supported the first t...Expand for more
hree months of Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) as well. May 2004: I attended the DoD MWD Supervisors Course and was assigned as the base trainer for about a year. May 2005 to Jan 2006: I deployed as a squad leader (would much rather have a dog at my side) and was operationally attached to the US Army and assigned to the 886 Expeditionary Security Forces Sqaudron at Camp Bucca, Theater Internment Facility, Iraq. I returned from Camp Bucca to fill the duties as Kennel Master (NCOIC) overseeing a 10 dog kennel facility and 8 certified teams. Feb 21 to Sept-1 2007: I again deployed to Iraq as a team leader to three squads, and as the squad leader of Sqd 3. This adventure found myself touring in the northern Iraq city of Kirkuk. Feb 26 - Sep 2009?: Currently on my fourth deployment to Southwest Asia. I can't believe it, I made it back to the US for an entire 18 mos before I was deployed again to Iraq. I have spent 17 years 1 mos in the Air Force, only three years 1 months to go then onto military retirment. Retirement will be short lived as I will look forward to finding that one civilian job that will keep me happy. I just found out tonight (14 May 2009) I was promoted to Master Sergeant (E7). I will know when I can pin on my new stripes soon. (update) looks like I will pin on in February 2010. As of Sept 8, 2009, I landed back in the Sweet land of the United States. Another deployment down, possibly one more to go. On this deployment I was stationed at Joint Base Balad ("Anaconda" for the Army). Had a really nice experience working with over 200 Ughandan, African Warriors. It will be an experinece I will not ever forget. Retired From the Air Force on 28 Feb 2013. Moved back to Colorado in April 2013.
