Diana Garza:  

I graduated from Brownsville High School in 1970. Right after graduation I started working for Southwestern Bell Telephone Company as an operator. I worked for Bell 32 years before retiring at the very young age of 50. When I worked at Bell I moved to different departments to learn as much as I could. While in operator services I was promoted to assistant chief operator when I was 21 and stayed in that position until the office closed and I moved to the business office. While I was in the business office I ran for Vice President of Cameron County of the Communications Workers America Union- District 6 and won the election. I served as Vice-President for 6 years. During that time I was part of the National Women's Conference and Chair of the Committee for 2 years. During my term I was nominated to attend the George Meany Center for Labor Studies in Silver Spring Maryland where I learned public speaking, organizing skills, contract negotiation, how to conduct a grievance & workers rights to name a few.
