I attended Columbia University School of Social Work as a trainee for VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) in March 1966. The intensive training program was to prepare us for service at various posts throughout the United States. My roommates were from California, Oregon and Pennsylvania. My assigned post was the YMCA in Baltimore, MD, where I met some great people and learned to deal with a variety of personalities in difficult situations.
I credit my five-month experience in New York and Baltimore with helping me to grow up and deal more openly with people in general and certain situations in particular.
