Diane's Story
Life
I was born and raised in the Olney section of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In 1969 after graduating from Olney High School, I entered the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where I majored in Elementary Education with a minor in vocal music performance. I met my husband, Marc (who is originally from Sheboygan, Wisconsin) at the university. We both loved Madison so much we decided to make it our home.
After a short time teaching elementary school and then working as a bookkeeper, I returned to UW in the late 70's and earned a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in Accounting. Music was still a major focus in my life, and in addition to working as an accountant, I was also a member of the Madison Symphony Chorus for many years and sang professionally at many weddings in the Madison area.
In 1994 I began tutoring Bar and Bat Mitzvah students at Temple Beth El. I teach the prayers of the service and the chanting of the Torah and Haftarah portions. I tutor 10-12 students at a time for one-hour individual sessions and find this to be an extremely rewarding experience.
In 1998, I gave up my accounting position at the Law firm of Winner, Wixson and Pernitz, to devote more time to my Bnai Mitzvah tutoring, my Cantorial music studies, and my computer graphics business - Desktop Publishing by DBK.
Currently, I am a Soprano soloist in Temple Beth ElÂs Choir. I sing with and play the guitar at Friday night Shabbat services, accompanying the Cantor monthly as well as playing for many Bar and Bat Mitzvah services. In 1999 I began formal studies to become a "certified" Reform Cantor and since 2000 I have been the ÂCantorial Soloist serving Congregation Beth Israel in North Adams, Massachusetts for the Jewish ...Expand for more
High Holy days.
In January of 2001 I was diagnosed with stage 3B invasive ductal breast carcinoma. In the following three years I had several surgeries, including a bilateral mastectomy, bilateral oopherectomy, three different types of chemotherapy over 64 weeks, five weeks of daily radiation, lymphedema, and two bouts of cellulitis, a life threatening infection. Despite the odds against me, I know how to live each day as if it were my last.
Looking back, I can say that many elements played a part in my road to survival--my loving husband, Marc, my family, hundreds of friends, but also my strong faith and spirituality (the three "F" words....Faith, Family and Friends).
Another important element of my story is our new book, Â...only Diane, written by my husband Marc. The unedited series of emotional stories were originally written as e-mail updates so hundreds of friends and family members could be kept in the loop after I was diagnosed with cancer. Marc says the series of emails, written over a period of almost a year, were a way for him to cope with his own pain. The response from the many readers were a continuing source of strength for both of us during this most difficult period.
I have been married to Marc (a Senior Vice President with Cuna Mutual Insurance Group) for over 32 years. We have two daughters, Jessica, 20, a Junior at University of Wisconsin-Madison, who wants to be a Rabbi, and Meredith, 17, our Âspecial daughter, who is a Sophomore at Middleton High School in Special Education (she has Pervasive Developmental Disorder with Autistic tendencies). We live in Middleton, Wisconsin (right outside Madison) along with our two cuddly Bichon Frises (little white fluffy dogs), Muffin and Monte.
