Diane Dale:

CLASS OF 1971
New city, NY

Diane's Story

Hi. I was that girl in the background without a clue about pretty much anything. I can't say that CHS was all that great for me and I have been out of touch since I left New City 37 years ago. The reunion invite came at an interesting time for me as my Dad died earlier this year and it has been a time of reflection. I've enjoyed scrolling down the names of former classmates and reading the posted stories. I now live in Charlottesville, VA with my husband Jack Robertson and our 17 yr old daughter Olivia. After a slow start. I managed to pull it together and have been living a pretty interesting life. I took a class in Ecology at RCC and discovered my inner-environmentalist. I studied landscape architecture (BLA, SUNY Environmental Science & Forestry; MLA, University of Pennsylvania; post-grad, Universita di Genova, Italy) and have focused on environmental planning and design at the city and regional scale. I returned from studies in Europe in 1981 to what had been the worst recession, reluctantly moved Nashville for employment, and have been in the South ever since. I spent a number of years in Washington DC before moving to Charlottesville for my husband's employment at University of Virginia. I've been Director of Community Design at William McDonough + Partners for ten plus years. In that capac...Expand for more
ity, I have had the opportunity to travel the world and hopefully make a positive impact of the environmental quality of cities. It has been a particular joy to take my daughter on business trips to Europe and Asia and add on time for adventures. In keeping with my tendency to bloom late, I had my daughter three days after I turned 40 and then went to UVA Law School at 42. Nothing like taking on law school with a toddler. Hopefully, raising a teenager at a time when some of you probably have grandchildren will keep me young, which is a good thing since I'll be working to fund her college education instead of planning my retirement. In my spare time I've become quote the urban vegetable gardener, combining my environmental commitments (think localized food production) and my personal interest in aging well. I enjoy tending the garden and harvesting my crops. I've become a vegetarian and am a pretty good cook. I truly love going out to the yard to pick the ingredients for our next meal. My husband Jack now heads the Thomas Jefferson Library at Jefferson's Monticello, a major cultural destination that some of you may visit. Please let me know if you come to our city and we can try to get together. I am not sure if I will make the reunion but I send my sincere regards and wish you all well. Diane
