Diane's Story
Workplace
After High School, and a short time at Highline CC, I did quite a bit of job changing. Never staying anywhere more than a few months to a year. Then I worked in Shipping and Receiving for a tool company for 3+ years. I really enjoyed that, but it was a dead end job. Then I worked for Ma Bell and AT&T (after divestature) for 8.5 years, as a long distance operator. It was interesting work and paid well, but I didn't really like it. Then I got the crazy idea that I wanted to drive truck long haul. I did that about a year and then some local driving. I like to say that I've been in "child care" for the past 13 years. When my son turned 2, I opened an in-home child care business. When he entered kindergarden, I went to work...Expand for more
in the security guard business. That's child care for much larger children. Then I worked in the YMCA B.A.S.E. program (latchkey/after school enrichment)for about a year. For the past 6.5 years, I've been a school bus driver. That's child care on wheels. Four of those years, I have worked with special ed. For the last 2 years, I've worked with at-risk youth in a Social Skills Training program. Some would say that these are "throw away" children and youth, but I find them bright, funny and challenging. I hope to work in their classrooms, next year, as a substitute parapro, between my bus routes. I doubt that this will be my last job, but I really like it. And it's been nice to have the same days off as my son, during his school years.
