Diane's Story

I currently share my home with my partner of 17 years who is a MD and she and I are raising our 14-year-old daughter who is heading to high school this fall in Athens Georgia. I have chosen to highlight my Career as an artist and Professor, rather than attempting to put 40 years of living into a document. Many of us in the class of 1968 were in grade school together and you might remember, I always wanted to be an artist and that is what has driven my life and travels. After receiving my BFA in 1976I moved to San Francisco and Oakland CA. From there I lived in Philadelphia, Brooklyn and Savannah GA before accepting a new teaching post in Athens GA. I have been teaching college drawing and painting for 19 years, 17 of which, at the University of Georgia where I am currently a full professor. I have taught in Ghana West Africa and Cortona Italy on studies abroad programs through our University. A Collaborative art piece titled "In The Name Of The Place" gave me an opportunity to travel to south Koreas with the traveling exhibition Since completing graduate school in 1986, I have been Represented by the George Adams Gallery, 525 West 26th New York City, NY 10001 for the last 16 years. RECENT AWARDS AND SCHOLARSHIP: My textbook, Dynamic Color Painting For Beginners, was published by Harry N. Abrams Inc, in New York City in 2008. The textbook was additionally published in the United Kingdom, under the title Colour Painting, Using The Full Palette through Laurence King Ltd in London England. This textbook is aimed at the college level art student. In the spring of 2009 the Spanish language edition of my textbook was released. 31049-21 Dynamic Color Painting for the Beginner: Abrams ISBN: 0-8109-7090-2 EAN: 9780810970908 Paperback I received the 2007 Anonymous Was A Woman grant. This collaborative art piece included professional artists, writers, Art Historians, anthropologists and most importantly Students from the California Institute of Art and the Lamar Dodd School of Art, University of Georgia. There were over one hundred participants in this collaboration with prime time television (Melrose Place) and in what became known as the GALA committee. The acronym stands for ¿Georgia and Los Angeles¿ where most of the participants came from. In cooperation with spelling productions we were given access and encouraged to create objects and props for the television show ¿Melrose Place.¿ Over three hundred paintings and props were included in televised episodes. This project was selected to travel from the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, to the Kwang Ju Biennial in South Korea, and the Grand Arts Art Center in Kansas City, MO. This group piece was featured on National Public TV in 2004. My solo and group exhibitions in combination have been reviewed twenty-seven times in venues as varied as the New York Times, the Philadelphia Inquirer Art News, the Atlanta Journal Constitution, the Los Angeles Times and the St. Louis Dispatch.
