Diane's Story

Living in Davis, CA, but also make regular trips to my place/friends near Athens, Georgia. Have a 1973 Winnie parked in Alaska and take it out of storage every summer to go vacationing, fishing, etc. Have worked for USDA for the past 31 years in environmental conservation work. Moved around a lot with the job-NY, DC, FL, GA, AK, CA. Love it, but have been doing it a long time. Can retire in 5 years so no plans to do anything else right now. Graduated from Cornell with BS in ag econ in '79. Was married in my twenties and divorced in my thirties. No kids. Got engaged again mid-thirties but lost my fiance in a car accident in 1995 so stopped looking for anyone else after that. Am very happy doing what I want to do and no compromising! My friend was a roadie with the Moody Blues so did a few road trips with him - quite fun. Love dogs but am dog-free right now cause it is easier with the travelling. Like snow skiing, scuba, my inflatable kayaks, movies, cooking, wining, dining, sushi and other raw things, dancing, music, reading, travelling, camping, fishing, gardening, raking leaves (no leaf blowers please), reality TV shows, dreaming, laughing, doing nothing. I've missed all the Shen '75 class reunions (haven't really been that many) but have stayed in touch with a few Shen folks. Just recently started going to Cornell Alumni events in the SF Bay area - they are great! What can I say? We are getting older. I found 50 hard to do - the mind and body are not as willing or sharp - but am now in my 2...Expand for more
nd half-century so am allowing myself to be more selfish and care-free. It is all good. Went to Burning Man in the northern Nevada desert the past couple of years - very interesting and fun. I thought I'd see Mr. Towns - former Shen chemistry teacher - but the crowd was too big. I am sure he was there, though. Am planning on going again this year for another adventure. Finally broke down and subscribed to Classmates.com - not sure why, just curious I guess. Hope everyone is doing well and enjoying your journeys. Fall 2009 Update: Less than 3 years till retirement - Yeah! Went to Burning Man again this year. Trying to do more cooking. Still doing the CA-GA-AK triangle. Hope everyone is healthy. Fall 2012 Update: new mantra: Health, Health, Health! My Mom passed away in Nov 2011 with brain cancer. It was a hard year for us but good spending more time with my sisters. I have been having my share of late life accidents. Bike accident in 2009 and fell off roof the other day when ladder slid out from me. Came crashing down with lots of bruises and a few broken ribs. Still resilient, but need to be more careful. Not ready to stop doing things, though. Makes the world too small. Retired in October 2011 after 36 years of working for USDA. I feel blessed every day . Am unsure of what's next. No specific plans but starting to feel antsy. Still doing Burning Man and the CA-GA-AK travelling triangle with side trips to Florida to visit family. Hope everyone is healthy and living the life you've dreamed.
