Diane's Story

U. Diane Buckingham, M.D. Adaptation Written by NAACP-Joann Herron publication Call Paper and New Directions In the July 2008 issue of national magazine Black Enterprise¿, U. Diane Buckingham, M.D. of Overland Park, KS was named as one of American¿s top ten African American psychiatrists of which was the only psychiatrist in private practice to receive this recognition. Dr. Buckingham is committed to raising awareness of the benefits of behavioral health treatment in communities of color. In that way, says Dr. Buckingham, patients will no longer avoid mental health treatment because of its stigma. Dr. Buckingham graduated from University of Kansas Medical Center with an M.D. in 1989. Board certified in both adult and child and adolescent psychiatry, she began consulting with New Directions in 2004, and has served in a variety of roles, including as a member of New Directions¿ Diversity Committee. In June 2008, Dr. Buckingham was awarded a unrestricted educational grant, which she used to support academic and web presentations, of the National Medical Association, of which she is currently chair of the Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences section , which is the largest physician organization in the country addressing health disparities in African Americans, and other people of color The symposium, entitled -The Black Family, was part of the National Medical Association National Conference and took place July 26 ¿ 31. gham as hosts were Dr. Camille Cosby (wife of Bill Cosby) and Dr. David Satcher, 16th Surgeon General of the United States. The symposium presented strategies and models for the psychiatric management of children, adolescents and adults, together with recommendations leading to the elimination of health disparities that affect African American and other populations of color. Dr. Buckingham says, Understanding effective interventions for patients and assuring equal access to the best available treatment are critical to realizing the promise of truly personalized medicine for psychiatric treatment. Past areas of practice focus have included work with children and adolescents with ADHD, Tourette's syndrome, and obsessive-compulsive disorder. Today, Dr. Buckingham is a nationally recognized expert in providing psychiatric care to African Americans and biracial children. She serves on the National Professional Advisory Board of CHADD and travels the country giving speeches to educate parents, teachers and health professionals about culturally correct assessments tools and treatment options for children of color with not only ADHD, but other behavioral and mental health diagnosis. She is the recipient of numerous awards, including the recognition as of the 20 top woman psychiatrists M.D.-Who Made a Difference: the interactive exhibits the Changing the Face of Medicine¿ which is displayed in 61 libraries across the United States between August 2005- November 2010.
