Dianna's Story

I got married summer of '64 to the love of my life, Frank. Graduated in 1965, a semester early. Had two sons, started to college when the youngest was in first grade, got my master's degree in psychology, got licensed to practice and now am a marriage and family therapist in Katy. Am active in my church, Grand Lakes Presbyterian and feel blessed every day for the wonderful life I have been given. I always wanted to be a Movie star when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a Dumb idea. As it turns out, they were Right. I have two Himalyan cats who keep me entertained. I also enjoy reading and playing video games. Right now my favorite game is Zuma Blitz. I never did anything wild in school. I heard that I had a reputation for being "stuck up". Actually I was shy. I was not originally from Houston. I was born in Bay City, TX and went to school in Palacios. My father died when I was 9 years old, and my mother married my stepfather who was a geologist for a seismograph company when I was 11 years old. I lived in various small towns in south and central Texas for the next two years, and we moved to Houston when I was in the 8th grade. I attended Hartman Jr. High in the 8th grade, then we bought a house which was in the attendance zone for Cullen Jr High. After I got married we lived in Houston. I worked at Prudential Insurance Company while my husband was finishing college at the University of Houston. When he graduated in 1967, we moved to Dallas, where our eldest son, David was born then back to Houston, where our youngest son Eric was born. We lived in Aldine until 1975, then we moved to Spring, TX. for 2 years. Frank got a job with Gulf Oil Chemicals in Sulphur, LA, where we lived until 1979. We moved back to Spring, and lived there until our two sons graduated from Klein Oak High School. Then we downsized and lived in Conroe for a couple of years, then in Houston for a year, and finally we moved to Katy where we have lived for the past 13 years. The teacher I would love to see again is Mrs Dorothy Bowman. She was such a profound influence on my life. Once when I was a junior in high school my parents were on the verge of getting a divorce and my mother left my stepfather and moved all of our belongings to Bay City. My siblings moved with her. I refused to go because it was in the middle of the spring semester, and I would have lost credits in French and plain geometry. I stayed briefly with a girl friend, but that didn't really work out. My husband-to-be had a college class with a girl named Linda who was a friend of Mrs. Bowman's daughter Ann, who was living with the Bowman's while she attended college. He asked Mrs. Bowman if she would mind taking in another boarder. She said that she would have to clear it with the school administration and that she would have to charge me to stay there. I think it is remarkable that Frank paid my room and board and that Mrs. Bowman would put her job on the line to enable me to complete the school year with a minimum of disruption. After our son David was born, we took him to see Mrs. Bowman. In addition to being an excellent algebra and geometry teacher, she was a wonderful and compassionate adult friend and role model to a 17 year old girl. If I won $100 million, I'd give 10 million of it to Charity, another 10 million to my church then spend the rest on my kids, my siblings and their families and my husband and myself. I'd probably save and/or invest most of it. I went back to college as a married adult with 2 kids and a home to manage, so I didn't live in a dormitory. The nearest to the "Greek System" I ever came was when I was inducted into Phi Theta Kappa while a sophomore at North Harris County College. ( now called Lone Star College). Wh...Expand for more
ile at UH I thought about joining Psi Chi, but decided not to. I was inducted into the Gold Key Honor Society. Campus life for me consisted of studying and going to the library. I carpooled while I attended UH and Texas Woman's University and made some good friends who were mainly in similar circumstances as myself. My current age is 71. When I was 12, I thought that people my age now would be older than dirt. I was so completely wrong! My best friend would tell you I'm friendly, but people who don't know me very well would probably describe me as quiet and withdrawn...or loud and obnoxious....depending on the circumstances. I dress pretty much the same as I did in the 60's, 70's, 80's, and the 90's. My style is stylishly conservative (translation, fuddy duddy!!) In 10 years, I hope to be a grandmother . I'm going to get there by praying for a miracle. My oldest friend would be my friend Donna whom I met when we were in the first grade in Palacios. She was an only child who was looking for a sister. I was the oldest of four children who needed someone I couldn't boss around. We lost touch when I got married and she went off to college, but occasionally we still touch base, recently through Facebook. She was my maid of honor at my wedding and I attended her wedding about 6 years later with an active toddler in tow. As kids we both liked to eat lemons with salt and read Nancy Drew Mysteries. We used to finish each other's sentences and said that our minds ran on the same track. Her daughter is a graphic artist and so is my youngest son, Eric. Everyone at my high school reunion would most likely be surprised that I have lost about 50 pounds since our last reunion, and that I have been married to the same man for 47 years. ( I am sure there was speculation about how many months our marriage would last) The weirdest job I ever had was working as a counselor -in-training at a methadone clinic. My first client was a big ole dude who told me he was out on parole and when I asked why he went to prison. He said it was for murder. I didn't stay there too long. I am currently working as a psychotherapist who helps couples who are trying to improve their marriages and avoid divorce or separation. I also do hypnosis for people who want to stop smoking, drinking, or want to lose weight. No trophies, but some college degrees: an associates degree, a bachelor of science in Psychology, and a Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology with an emphasis in Marriage and Family Therapy . I graduated with honors. In 10 years, I hope to be Retired and traveling. I'm going to get there by working hard now and saving my money. My first job was at Boaz Construction Company in Palacios, where I got paid $2.50 an hour to do some typing, make coffee, answer the phone and greet people who came in the office. What I remember most about it is Drinking so much coffee I was wired and couldn't sleep, so I read all of James Michener's Hawaii. I was in French Class but didn’t know I was French at the time. Does anyone remember Miss Gilliam? I remember her trying to get us to sing 🎶 La Vie En Rose 🥀. I was still wondering what ever happened to Mrs Boch. We had some real geniuses at Jones High School. And I should know. I rubbed elbows with most of ‘em. I was in Major Works Biology, Major Works English, and wanted to be in Major Works Math, but for some reason I wasn’t allowed to be although I made all A’s in Geometry. But I guess for some reason they didn’t know that I could have handled it. Heck, I could read and write, couldn’t I? My dream was to become a doctor and find a cure for Cancer ♋️. Or at least to find out how my Daddy died. At the obscenely young age of 32 after being a paratrooper in Normandy and the Battle of the Bulge and surviving.
