Adrian's Story

2019: Life In Temecula Wine Country is such a blessing to both of us. Our ranch has a 360* view of the sky up on the Mesa behind South Coast Winery. We've been married 51 years this Dec. 9th. Den won't let me do canning any longer. He'd rather I enjoy my art passions, my designing of our garden*s Tree Art Displaying of faerie art, rabbits, and my favorite artists' works with hundreds of solar lighting enhancement and share our travels together with our RVing and timeshares. Gardening is a shared enjoyment between us. 5.5 acres of two parts mountain prevents us from ever being bored. We have belonged to two travel clubs for over fifteen years. We now invite friends to camp on our ranch before we start our January outings each year. I still sing gospel occasionally. But, I no longer sing professionally. When I was a children's Librarian , I was known as a Singing Historical Librarian Storyteller for at least thirty years before retiring. It was a delight to work with all ages of students. I demonstrated a few times for the state/county CMLEA Workshops how to inspire reading with music, thus shifting to the right side of the brain enabling more retention. Middle school students used to need to use the Melville Dewey Classification System, which the internet uses as well for categorical subject headings. I instructed it with a microphone system using rap style. It was a privilege to work with children and staff. Dennis loves to fish. We go with a group of friends to the High Sierras twice a year to McGee Creek and to Silver Lake for trout fishing. The wives hangout shopping, crafting, games, etc. and enjoying how beautiful it is to be in God's country. ..........Life is changing...but, my past first. I am blessed by my many influences from my family. My Aunt Helen was a famous singer and hoofer on Broadway; Sang on the radio for years, and loved giving me music lessons. My Cousin, George Carr, was a marvelous pianist and singing coach in seven languages. He trained me for fifteen years. I'll never forget a phone call from him when one of his students, Grace Marque...spelling.. was singing in the NY Gardens, then, taking a tour through the US in the Playboy Clubs. She got accute loss of voice. They wanted me to fly to NY, do her two week gig, and do the Playboy Club tour. He had always been "terrif" and supportive of me. But, when I told him I was seven months pregnant, which I had neglected to mention, he was furious with me. I had been married for three years, doing short gigs, singing for large churches, etc. I had given up the idea of touring with my band in Vegas, etc. under contract, as my wonderful husband and friend, Dennis, preferred me home. Today, I still sing gospel and "stuff" I love. Our grandchildren love music. Singing to our newest grandchildren of 15 months and five months old is grand. Music just seems to "mellow" the soul and give a communication bond of love and trust. My Grandmother, Millie, had an eighty acre farm in Modesto County all my growing up years. This is how a city girl fell in love with the open spaces of the countryside, smelling wonderful animals, milking cows, horses, etc. and the appreciation of growing crops and the sweet smell of alfafa in the fields. Grams taught me how to make a cobler When Dennis and I started our family, we knew we wanted to do it out of the realm of the city. We tried for over twelve years to transfer to Garberville in the mist of the Redwoods. But, his corporate bosses would not release him to work in the sticks. Dennis introduced computers and using a thing called MasterCard plastic instead of money to be used. My Great Great Grandfather is Sgt. Don Jose Francisco de Ortega, who is named in the history books for discovering San Francisco Bay. He was given one of the largest Spanish/Mexican Land Grants in California...after his death. The lands were what you call Santa Barbara County today. The rancho went to the ocean's foam on Refugo State Beach. My Great Grandfather received title to his lands after his death. My father, Walter Betts, introduced me to fishing in the High Sierras. His father and grandfather took him by backpack into the Mammouth area before roads. Dad introduced my husband, Dennis, to fly fishing in streams. We enjoy going to Paradise Lodge in Bishop, CA. and the Mammouth areas. Dennis introduced me to powder and the thrills of skiing. My dad introduced me to horseback riding when I was three. Our family used to ride in Griffith Park every month. I loved it. So, when we moved to our ranch in the Temecula Wine Country, we bought horses for our kids and family. Back then in 1977 there were mostly open mountains and trails without houses and people. We entered our kids into 4-H. They loved the girls, our milking goats. Taking a Library Science Class to get back into the swing of things at college; Found that I liked it and being with kids in school. It is a previlege to make teenagers Finders instead of Surfers on the Net. My Ms. McGregor's Linked Internet Library will be up soon at home. I'll maintain it in my "senior years". If someone were to ask me what most I love about how my life has been lived, I could not give just one answer; My love of God, his kindnesses to me, my wonderful husband and friend, my children, my love to inspire children, my friends, reading, my job of working with children daily, my joy when I sing...and my pleasure of being in the garden on our ranch...the peace working in it and sharing it with guests to our home.. The joy the night stars bring to your heart in our rural country sky and seeing wildlife everywhere each day. We never got to the Redwoods to live. But, we found a close second in beauty within the mountains of Temecula. When life gives me seconds for quiet, I think of you guys...when Classmates welcomes me back to the 60's. Sign my book when you visit. It's nice to see some one's name from the past whose path is crossing mine again. College Just went back this December, 2004 for my sorority's 50th Anniversary. I was their guest speaker. While driving back to the streets of my past, thoughts drifted in and out of my mind. What could I share and tell modern independent women of 2000's? They were so awesome. The whole room was full of questions: What was it like to be at school in the 60's; what were parties and rush like?, etc. It was like seeing a segment in the movie, "The way we were" with Barbara S' and Redford; but with a happier ending. "We are women of the sixities, and WE STILL HAVE A CAUSE." They were amazed that we had to wear nylons and could only wear sandals and pants during semester break. We are and were the rebels of many causes as Julia Roberts displayed so "prefectly" in the Mona Lisa Smile; the movie of a 50's teacher in a traditional woman's college who did not believe a woman's mind was just to be prepared for marriage. After I was given a five minute standing applause as I walked to the podeumn, I was struck with pride that I am a 60's woman! I opened with this statement, " My name is Adrian Bett-McGregor. I'm a 60's woman who still has many causes!" They stood up, again, applauding for another five minutes. The 1960's were an exciting time. Everything was opening up for women. Once we got past the thoughts of romance and finding Mr. Perfect... geographically done by chance, we got into the persuit of life. Today on many campuses, Frat life is limited due to housing, time and costs. Since you all lived the sixities, you know what I spoke about; Dress codes of nylons on campus, no pants except during finals, Kennedy, Vietnam and the loved ones we miss who did not come home, make-up, manners, dating, and frat life; thousands of sorority and fraternities around California and the US. I told my sorority sisters that if I could do one thing over as a 60's person in the twenty-first century, it would be to keep in touch with friends, always. Time flys away too quickly. Before you know it thirty years are gone. They have internet and teliconferencing. And, now we have as well. The Internet can keep buddies closier for real... and not, just in memory. Workplace It has been my pleasure for the last twenty-seven years to hang out with children in the educational system of both private Christian Schooling and Public Education. I've worked as a K-5 singing storytelling librarian, a Referencing Middle School Librarian and at Linfield Christian High School. It has been an exciting time of writing curriculum and helping write the History of Temecula for my school district. When I retire, soon, I plan to help make e-texts of historical books for on-line research, write children's stories, and continue my quest in art. I enjoy doing Web site designing. I plan to start selling my art work, again, when I retire. In September of 2002 I finished a two year project for literacy, which assists children with finding information instead of Surfing for it with previewed Web sites. Watching them enjoy self success is very gratifying. Life as a Middle School Librarian changes hourly. My last full year will be 2005-06. My wonderful husband is older. He's been waiting for me to close the library doors and to keep him company chasing our next twenty years of dreams. I love it that he loves to read, too! He's my best friend, and the love of my life. We love fishing and traveling together. We retired on the same day together, December 30th. Once I'm offically retired, I wi...Expand for more
ll have a Mrs. McGregor's Linked Library specializing in history and children's literacy. It will help kids and grown-ups to locate referencing questions more easily, based on the Standards. I took it down a couple of years ago, but may put a storytelling site up in 2015. For the last 38 years my handsome husband, Dennis, and I have lived in the Temecula Wine Country on a mountain patch of earth in a guesthouse first then the big house we built with our own set of hands. It took us over four plus years to dig the foundations, frame, drywall , roof two tile roofs, and finish it. I learned to crawl up 40 feet of scaffling to put on all of the texturing, sealing and painting. We call it, "McGregors' Manor Ranch". It makes your spirit sore when an eagle lands in your watering basins placed out for them or in a "precious moment" when a weary hummingbird lands on your fingers to rest and drink. I sit on a stool under a cactus bloom and watch them feed. They are amazing. Our vineyard we planted is gone due to being organic ranchers who would not use posions to combat the Pierce Disease cause by the Sharp Shooter Insect. At one time we had over four hundred fruit, citrus, almond trees. We planted everything we thought we might enjoy eating. For years I canned and/or freeze dried or dried indian style in the sun what we grew. Life has been filled with many blessings, which began by growing up in such a wonderful place as Downey and hanging out with great people while growing up. In the future I plan to continue upon retirement to assist with preserving the histories of our valleys, writing e-books for children and perhaps digitalizing rare books for the historical society/museum. Dennis and I love to travel. We enjoy camping amongst nature. We're busy making plans to travel the states...investgating some of my famous family members' histories, which are in the history books of the US.Luckily for us, family live o the property, too.most of the time, or they stay here while we are gone. When I have moments of time I still love to sing; I am an Oral History Singing Storyteller. Our three wonderful children and grandchildren live near us. It is our treasures...to see them and vacation together. When I'm not enjoying grandchildren, you'll find me in our gardens. Dennis maintains our deminished numbers of trees. The rising temperatures and lack of water have taken their toll. But, we remember when riding our ole golf cart what it was. I used to do the bonsi and flowers. Now, I am redesigning all of our areas to basically non-water as much as possible. It is our United Nations Act 21 reality As water continues to be more scarce in this eleventh year of a sixty year drought, we continue to count tree trunks value. Try to read, "Deep: The Story of snow". It is a 30 year collection of scientific data of the deminishing of 60% of the 2 biillion populations' of the world water supply. My favorite song to listen to is "Happy, Happy." Love their 40 years of musical sounds. It is August of 2014. Stay safe. Be happy. And, KNOW, that 63' is the best. Sorry I missed our reunion. I was recovering from a Big C surgery. All is well. We sold our wonderful Party Pontoon Boart. They don't allow boats on some of the reservors now down San Diego way. They are expanding the holding capacity for recycled waters. We enjoyed having it these last eight years. Befor that we had a twenty-eight footer we kept at the river for eight years. When we were newly weds we enjoyed sailing and racing our Lideo 14 boat for over twenty years. Last year Den pulled seventy-one almond trees. When you cut back on the water, the barks thin. Then, they sun burn and suffer. Its 2008 and the bulldozers just left our ranch. We're into the fourth year of the promised Climatic Global Warming's forecast of a 30 year drought. No new agriculture water metors permits are being issued; only non-agricultural water metors since 2007. This January our ranch's water usage was cut by at least 50 % in what they call 3 tiered usage ratest We tore out a few hundred trees and over 300 flowering plants and bushes. I believe the last days are near. Tornadoes were there never have been any throughout our country. Now, on the CEQA, MWD and other web sites they are publishing the facts that the Pacific Coast Line along our California Coastline is rising. It is supposed to raise 18 feet with the melting glaciers of the Arctic and Antaractia. We only have one ice shelf left, I believe named Shelf I which is holding Noah's Arch's Waters back from our earth. We continue to "Review the Situation", as in OLIVER.... May we all have joy each day as we are given. And, make joy by loving those around us. As of the week of July 11th, Governor Brown has put the entire state on three days a week outside watering limitations. Yet, new freeway watering systems are being put in along the parkways and freeways? 20,000 plus new approved homes are approved and waiting to be built. And, our wonderful Supervisor Jeff E. Stone of District 3 has approved to allow the Vintners to expand their water usage 38% more with new Wine Tasting Establishments, and two to four story (two stories underground) new hotels, and put in over fine new miles of Virigin Sewer systems into Wine Country he has expanded from 18,000 acres to 22 to 24 miles of Wine Country, broken down into areas, mostly UNDER THE SPHERE OF INFLUENCE OF THE ITY OF TEMECULA, who are busy bringing in foreign investors...this was disclosed to us in 2012 thru 2014. We are in our 6th year in 2012 of retirement and still not finding enough time in each new day! We've joined two traveling clubs with our rig plus still enjoying our time share travels. As promised to we ranchers/farmers in the annual Water District Meeting of 2008, The MWD is taking away the affordable agricultural water from farmers and ranchers in CA after 2013 by November. MWD's Charter philosophy has always been to supply urbanized areas. In 2008 they told us they are making all water users to pay full urbanized water rationed prices. No longer will MWD offer reduced water prices to farmers. Yet, the City of Teecula formed in 1989 and county have over extended federal water importing water ratos since they exceeded their growth limitations. City Council Member Samuel Pratt wrote a letter to both the City of Temecula and the County of Riverside in Feb. of 2002 that when they exceeded the amount of about 88,000 units here, they were over their alloted water import formula. All of this growth was started in the early 70's with Hill 27 or 29. This was before our historical dry farming areas of over 92,000 acres were developed and subdivided into water user lands. The vineyards were not experimentally planted here on dry farming lands until 1968. The first planted vineyard was done by Audrey Cilurzo by hand on their family purchased properties. Yahoo showed three months ago in 2013 that in Anartica there is a 300 sq. mile glacier fully cracked through. Scientists do not know "now" how much land mass will be lost when it breaks loose and melts. Japan's tragedy one year later has entered our CA sea alge along our shorelines and debris is washing up upon our three state's of shoreline. San Onofre Nuclear Plant built in the Russian design just like Japan, was shut down indefinitely in March 2012 with hundreds of potential water cooling pipes worn. We are in their air basin. Have had 3 tornadoes in Temecula over our 35 years of being here. But, only one is documented. It touched down across the street from the Pechanga Casino with the outter perimeter having 107 mph winds. Sempra/SDG & E is supposed to have 2 Billion Dollars in Trust incase it needed to be dismantled. They only have 1.7 in Trust. So, I supose the citizens will be paying for its dismantling they estimate will take up to 50 years to complete. All of the spent nuclear rods in a Russian design plant are underground in its vault....have to be removed. They say our Temecula area has to have a $130 million dollar desalinization plant built behind Vail Lake Dam. But, they only received a federal grant for about 8 and three quarters million dollars. So, we know who will pay for this as well so we can drink recycled raw water made drinkable. So what's to come of all of this? We have to continue to keep our eyes on the heavens and live our lives as HE directs us to use the fruits of the spirits given to each and every one of us daily. We are fishing with our pontoon boat in our three local lakes by our home. We play often with the children and take each day as a new mystery of excitement to happen. (Just sold it after 8 years. Everyone is too busy to use it often enough to warrant keeping it. It's too big for us to manage it on windy days with just two. Our little ones are in school full time now. So, we sold it last month in 2014. Perhaps, we will buy a smaller one later. Diesel nearly hit $5.00 per gallon this year. If Syria errupts with war in the Gulf, we're being told gasoline may cost $8.00 per gallon. Read "Crisis on Tap" news article from 2009 if you live in CA so you can modify. Wish all of you the happinesses of your heart. Pray for needed rains and not the Noah's Arc forecasted for CA in the future like so many are getting within the US...like ten inches over night? ..The sixties were not so wild after all. They were...calm compared to the times we face ahead of all of us. Always, "macs"...alias, Adrian
