Dick's Story
I left McDowell early & went to Garden Grove California. A few months later I went to Viet Nam. I was a heavy equipment operator assigned to MCB-10 we landed in Chu Lai Viet Nam on May 7, 1965 with the 3rd marines. I did 4 tours in Viet nam 2 with the Seabees & 2 with Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD). I was a slow learner & kept wanting to go back to Viet Nam. Graduated from Kinnick High School in Japan & got my degree from City University. Retired from the Navy with 28 years total service, as a Senior Chief, & Master EOD Technician. Became a Law Enforcement Officer & retired as a Dept. of Defense 1811 Criminal Investigator working with NCIS. My most memorable time was when I was on leave in 1967 when I stayed with my mother in Garden Grove Calif.......I am so sorry for the things "I DIDN'T DO"! And yes I have regrets!!!!!!!When I came back from Viet Nam the 1st tour my girl friend was pregnant by she didn't know who......23 different possibilities. Needles to say that engagement didn't last long. My 2nd tour my wife was living with someone else when I returned home. Filed for divorce in 1967. My self esteme & confidence was quite low for awhile after that. So it was easy for me to request to go back to Vietnam, which I did 2 more tours after that. I met someone very special while visitig my mother in 1967. For the last 42 years I have been haunted for not doing what my heart was telling me to do back then. All I have are very special memories & a whole lot of regrets.
