Dr. Dick's Story

Lived in Montgomery,AL, for 11 years. Now living in Toney, AL, - 30 minutes NW of Huntsville, AL. Since May, 2018. I am still on the faculty at Mercer University in Georgia, promoted in 2015 to rank full professor of criminal justice & homeland security. I was promoted to full professor previously at Aurora University in 1984, but relinquished the rank when I moved to Auburn University. I earned promotion again to rank of professor at Mercer. Commuted twice a week for 8 years to Atlanta area while living in Montgomery, then once a week for half a year from Huntsville area. Now, I am teaching online only, no more commuting. I was thinking of retiring when we moved, but no need to now since teaching strictly online. I live with my wife, Joyce, and two dogs, a Yellow Lab and a Golden Retreiver. Our daughter, received a Ph. D.. in May, 2020 from Syracuse Univ. Now 2nd Dr. Martin in family, has an established therapy practice;, teaches full-time at Syracuse Univ. and is a member of the Air Force National Guard. We have lived in Highland & Muncie, IN; Wheaton, & Woodstock, IL;, Kearney, NE; & Findlay,OH. Katie (now goes by Tristan, K. Martin. She played four years of college basketball. She had a full ride at Spring Hill College in Mobile, played two years, then transferred to Huntingdon in Montgomery after her coach was fired. She was promised a 5th year medical redshirt by the Huntingdon BB coach who said he had secured a medical redshirt. In her first year, she had to drop from school because of mono during her second semester at Spring Hill. The Huntingdon coach promised that he had secured a medical redshirt to get her to sign, but he lied to us, There was no medical redshirt. Since she thought she would be a 5th year senior with one more year to play, she delayed graduation for a year. Instead of graduating in 2013, she graduated a year later. That 5th year was the first time she had not been on a school or AAU team since the 4th grade. During senior year,, she led the conference in 3-point shooting with 39.8%. Developed a good jump shot (not a set shot) by attending Dick Baumgartner's Shooting Camp in Richmond, IN, for 8 summers and was a shooting camp counselor the 9th summer. Huntingdon won the regular season championship and the conference tournament championships and went to the NCAA tournament; won first round and lost in second. Ended up in the top 32 D3 teams in country. In the conference tournament, with a 2 pt. lead late in the game, she scored 8 unanswered points in one minute to increase the lead to 10 and put the game out of reach; she made a 2 and 2-3s. She was academic all conference her last two years at Huntingdon, as well as continuing to be on dean's list. During 2014 (5thyear), Katie played for the Maxwell AF Base team since she was in AFROTC. She made the AF conference all tournament team and was nominated for the AF National Team (only 30 in the country). She graduated cum laude & with honors and a 3.8 GPA, top psychology student award and membership in several academic honor organizations such as Psi Chi National Honor Society, Alpha Beta Honor Society, Who's Who, AFROTC academic honors and physical fitness awards. She worked as a lifeguard at the Montgomery Country Club (MCC) and was head lifeguard for two years. After graduating, while studying toward an MS degree at Mercer U Med School for two years and summers ,she was a lifeguard at the Mercer outdoor pool and indoor pool during academic years, and later was a life guard in Syracuse during first summer. Developed swimming skills while on AAU swim teams in grade school and jr. hi. She finished a 2-year masters degree in the Mercer Medical School in marriage and family therapy (MFT), then Syracuse, awarded her a full teaching assistantship with a monthly stipend for 3 years. Finished the dissertation, defended dissertation successfully and was awarded a PhD at end of 4th year. Tristan, the name she goes by now, left today (1/11/22) for AF basic training in TX after joining the Air Nat. Guard; put her established marriage and family therapy clinic and clients on hold until finished with training. Mar.3, graduated from basic training and leaves for Biloxi for 4 weeks of tech trai...Expand for more
ning, then back to Syracuse and therapy practice. She was an honor guard, finishes in top 10% of the 800 MBT graduates. I also have two sons (Todd in Texas and Scott & family in Seattle), and two granddaughters. Scott played in college on a national championship runner-up team; he played H.S. ball at Muncie Central when they won two state championships. Scott, who has an MBA was a stay-at-home dad, and later was a liquor compliance officer at the Seattle Seahawks stadium. Currently the operation manager for a security company. His wife was hired by Walmart corporate office and they will be relocating to Bentonville, AR (only 8 hours away from Toney). Todd was a four year varsity basketball starter in high school (two in Nebraska and two at Wheaton Central in Illinois. Didn’t want to play college ball. He still holds several junior high shooting records in Muncie, IN and Kearney, NE. My hobby over the years had been following my kids sporting events. Now, I spend my free time working out and writing - doing research. My goal is to have one peer reviewed journal publication for every year of college teaching. I now have 47 and about 10 to go to reach my goal. If I keep working, that number goes up. Not bad for someone having to take dummy English at Valpo out of HS. I have been involved with law enforcement and criminal justice higher education since 1970, having worked at several universities, including Ball State, University of Nebraska Kearney, Aurora University, Elgin Community College, the University of Findlay, Auburn University Montgomery (26 years as Dept. head), and now, in my 12th year at Mercer. I was the department head at all schools except Ball State and Mercer. I am active in the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP); a certified international accreditation assessor for the Commission for Accreditation of Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) out of Washington, D.C.; certified accreditation assessor for the International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Agencies (IACLEA); police consultant; gang prevention grant peer reviewer for the OJJDP of the U.S. Dept. of Justice; a peer reviewing editor for the Journal of Gang Research; an associate editor for the Journal of Education and Training Studies and the La Enforcement Executive Forum Journal I am also on the editoriial review boards for Forensic Research and Criminology International journal; Journal of Forensic Science and Addiction: Sage Open, and Journal of Environmemtal Science and Health. Besides having several peer reviewed journal publications, I have two published textbooks. I earned two third degree black belts in mixed martial arts, and I am a certified self-defense instructor. Implemented self- defense classes at 4 schools. I attended Valpo Univ. for a year and a half - played basketball and ran cross country. (ineligible after 1st sem.; then transferred to Lipscomb Univ summer of 59 on a full basketball scholarship and ran track. MVP of conference tournament in 1961 and voted cpt senior year and voted first team NAIA all district I earned a B.S in 1962 from Lipscomb, an M.S. from Indiana University in 1967, and a doctorate (Ed. D.) from Indiana University in 1981. Before my higher education experiences, I taught at Hosford Park Elementary for one year, Calumet H.S. for three years (coached freshman basketball), and taught at East Gary H.S. for another three years before leaving to become a police officer in Highland, IN, in 1970 ( my oldest son and father were also police officers). Other law enforcement positions I have held include deputy director of police in-service training ASSIST Region in Chicago area for state of Illinois; elected constable, Delaware County, IN; police commissioner, Woodstock, IL,; and McHenry County, IL, sheriff's merit commissioner. I am also a member of the Alabama Law Enforcement Agencies (ALEA) Command and Staff College Academic Policy Board; member of Theta Chi fraternity, several Masonic bodies (Scottish Rite, York Rite, & Shrine), and I have been inducted into the Calumet High School (Gary, IN) Athletic Hall of Fame. At my age now, 82, it’s good to keep the mind challenged and active. If interested, go to Google for a list of publications.
