Dick's Story
I have always been lazy and lucky. I went to NYC in 1969 to try to break into publishing. To fill out my resume, at the bottom I had put that I had graduated from RHS. The guy interviewing me said, ¿Ohmygod, you¿re from Robbinsdale!¿ This was at Fawcett Publications (True magazine, Mechanix Illustrated, Woman¿s Day, Gold Medal Books, etc.), which I had forgotten had been founded in Robbinsdale right after WWI before it moved to Manhattan. as named after the first Fawcett publication, Captain Billy¿s Whiz Bang, and I had once dated a Miss Whiz Bang runnerup, so that made me important to the company¿s cultural history. (All I remember about the date was that there was a lot of whiz, not much bang.) I went on to work for eight magazines in New York, and was fired from six of them, all for good cause. For the past 19 years I have worked in western Massachusetts as a freelance writer. I¿ve been lucky in my personal life, still married to the same woman. We have one child, a son.
