Victoria's Story

Well, hello there Mt. Plesant HS Class of '69 All!!!! O M G ... 40 years ago ... it can't be!!! I sure don't feel this old! However, when I chat with the young ones of today, I KNOW I'm old! After MPHS, I went onto U of DE, and studied Art History. I was President of the Art History Club from 1970-73, and made all kinds of history during my tenure ... [the good kind] Upon graduating in 1973, I happily and joyfully moved to NYC to work and live from 1973-79. Had the absolute blast of my entire life! Best times EVER! It was there that I "came out of my shell, and discovered the 'real me.'" Also found out that NYC was my real "home-town," psychologically, personality, and emotionally-speaking!! After my Grandmother died on 1/23/79, I returned to Wilmington to live with my Mother for the next 8 years. I worked full-time temp jobs w/the DuPont and Hercules companies. My first job was w/the Delaware Art Museum as the Secretary to the Director of Development, which turned out to change my life. Suffice it to say, during those years (1979-85), I got to be with "the other side of the tracks, and see how the other half lives." I began collecting many local artists, attending every gallery opening, three parties, and many catering jobs, but I had SO much FUN!!! One night at one of the art museum's Beaux Arts Balls, our Carson Zullinger said to me, "Victoria, don't you think it's time you went back to New York where you belong?" And so, in May 1985, I packed up and headed off back to NYC to prepare my way for my M.A. at NYU in Visual Arts Administration, where, again, I made more (good) history .... I graduated from NYU on 6/6/88 with my M.A!!! While in CA, I did open, own, and operate my Visual Arts Presentation Management business with 3 incredible women sculptors! Had the time of my life!!!!! Today I am happier and more content than I have ever been. I am 21 years sober and clean. I live simply and quietly in Portland, Maine, in the "Munjoy Hill" neighborhood, with my super cat Porter. As of 9/30/10, I will be moving from my apartment where I've been living for 10 years here on Munjoy Hill here in Portland. Where am I going...Expand for more
(and right now the date is ... 9/16/10 ...)? I do NOT know! It's looking much better, though. It's really warming up ... By Monday of next week I feel/believe I should know where Porter cat and I are moving to. Why? The landlord has wanted to renovate my apartment for 9 out of the past 10 years I've lived in it! Why? Because I have: the biggest, best, best-naturally-designed apartment out of ALL 6 units in this turn-of-the-century building ... the real character, of course, which has been completely and totally DESTROYED! Yet, in MY apartment, it's original room-size largess was retained, including HUGE windows in each of the HUGE 3 main rooms! Size-wise, it's a total PALACE! However, in THIS move, I have QUITE the "improvement-list" I'm seeking, INCLUDING the landlord's personality, ethics, moral decency, natural respect for right vs. wrong, a cultured, well-educated, PROGRESSIVE human being. Now, I HAVE found the landlord. I just saw his 2nd apartment last night, and, of course LOVED IT! However, I'm still holding out, because I two (2) more dream places to visit today and on Saturday. I have been accepted already at a place, but ... I don't have a car, and, for me, trying to get my twice-monthly load of groceries there by bus ... especially in the winter, with NO sidewalks from the perfect bus stop to the front door ... not so good ... And, I have my many, many, many special things from Wilmington ... Kristin L. you know what things I'm referring to ... we ALWAYS ran into one another at EVERY event all over town for YEARS ... !! I still have ALL but 2 which I had to sell just to survive ... broke my soul and my heart, and, of course, I got you know what done on those "sales" ... One in particular practically STOLE it from me as far as I was concerned, but I was SO up against the proverbial wall, and that "dealer" knew it, and ... steal she did!! Won't her grandchildren LOVE that inheritance!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Well, I still have Jim's gem of gems, and I DID beat out Momma C. for that one!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I got THE BEST ONE HE EVER, EVER DID! More tales from Portland when I return! Love to everyone! Victoria 9/17/10
