Russell's Story

Hi Redlands HS Class of 1958 In the middle of my Junior Year, 1957, I dropped out of high school, joint the Air Force, learned electronics, and while the rest of you were in your senior year, I was in Morocco, North Africa. It was lots of fun there, but I decided it wasn't cool to be a high school drop out, so I started going to college at night while I was still 17, attending the University of Maryland Overseas. I returned to the States in 1959, taught electronics in Biloxi, Mississippi, and then attended the University of Oklahoma on an Air Force Scholarship, graduating (Electrical Engineering) in 1964. I spent four years as a Lt. and Capt. working on rocket guideance systems at Norton Air Force Base in San Bernardino. The Air Force sent me on a scholarship for a Masters. I was always interested in astronomy, and my electrical engineering interests were applied to first automation of telescopes and observatories. My doctoral degree is in astronomy, and I was the founder and director of the Fairborn Observatory on Mt. Hopkins in southern Arizona for a decade, the planets first fully robotic astronomical observatory. I served as the 51st president of the A...Expand for more
stronomical Society of the Pacific. I am married to the Cheryl Linda (mainden name Fallick), five years my junior, who graduated from Yucaipa High School. Her older brother, Richard Fallick, was my best friend, and I spent lots of time when I was a kid at Cheryl's ranch in Oak Glen. After I joined the Air Force I didn't see her for over three decades, but about ten years ago I tracked her down, courted her, and we were married six years ago. You can see our story on my Orion Observatory site. Currently I hold a research position at California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo, and also teach astronomy at Cuesta College part time. I organize conferences (see Galileo's Legacy or Evolutionary Epic), write or edit books (now over 20 of them), and generally have a good time. Cheryl and I spend the winters in Hawaii. Is there going to be a 50th reunion this year? I looked over the Classmates list of the RHS 1958 class and recognized Alice Felts, Larry Ratliff, Carmen Spoto, and Lynda Webster (and Donna Wright?). Lynda was at my wedding to Cheryl, Cheryl and I see Lynda now and then. I would enjoy hearing from anyone that remembers me. Aloha, Russ
