My Pets
16 Hand bay and white pinto (thoroughbred/paint cross) mare named Almond Joy. She produced two lovely colored foals for us that we were able to sell right away. When we moved aboard the boat we sold Almond Joy to Diana Nicklas in Ostrander, Ohio. Diana has continued to train her and use her as a brood mare and she has produced several lovely foals, all of which have been sold.
Current:
2002 - We are now retired and living on a sailboat named SOUTHERN CROSS. She is a 1974 Dickerson 41 ketch. The last wood hull that Dickerson made.
We have traveled up to the top of Maine and around to the west coast of Florida. The first owners of the boat, Neville and Louise Lewis with their son Chris, took SOUTHERN CROSS around the world from 1974 to 1979. 2006 - Cruised the Bahamas
2007-2009 - Cruised the Caribbean, US Virgins around the Leeward and Windward Islands down to Trinidad and Venezuela. Then around again from Puerto Rico to Venezuela again and then on to the western Caribbean including the ABC Islands, Colombia, Panama, Honduras, Guatemala, Belize and back to the US via the Dry Tortugas and Key West FL.
2011 - Right now we are stopped in Oriental NC, the sailing capitol of North Carolina. Oriental located on the inner banks of North Carolina, is where boats out number the residents of this village; 875 residents to 3000 boats! We are remodeling the interior of the boat for more cruising. We came to Oriental due to Joe Clay, a fabulous shipwright, that is helping Don with the remodeling.
