Dollie's Story
Life
In the late sixties I was one of the students that dropped out of high school. Today I am a high school dropout that graduated three times from the University of Kentucky. I teach communications at LCC and EKU.
While attending MSHS, we lived in the housing projects. They weren't quite the place they are now, nonetheless the stigma was still there. Today, my husband and I work extensively with the children/families in Eastern Kentucky.
This Christmas will be our eighth shoebox drive. We pick a county, get names from the elementary schools and before long each child has a brightly wrapped gift with their name on it. The gifts come from fraternities, sororities, churches, my students, etc. Over the past seven years we have given out 4,600 gifts.
Our first drive went to the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota. We sent 1,000 boxes that covered half of the elementary schools K-8. The following year we went to Owsley County Elementary, Wolfe, Menifee, Jackson, Lee and Estill Counties. Because of the economy we have had to drop back to one school per Christmas so we are going back to Estill County again this year.
I still volunteer at Southland Christian Church and am also the co-founder of the Pine Ridge Missi...Expand for more
on located at Pine Ridge, Ky. they serve Wolfe, Powell, Owsley and Lee Counties.
In addition to that, I am the proud mother of three children. My oldest daughter has a business degreee and is employed by UK, my son has a degree in wildlife management and lives in Anchorage, and my youngest daughter has a degree in mortuary science. Yes, she is a funeral director, well atleast for five years. She now has a degree in Criminal Justice and is working on her MA and recently applied for a job with Homeland Security.
My children have great spouses and have given me grandcatsand granddogs, but no grandchildren as of yet.
My husband is a general contractor and we are incorporated in the state of Florida and here as well. He keeps hoping I'll like Florida. I keep hoping he'll like Montana. In November he suffered his second heart attack but keeps on trucking as we all do.
I have a book that just came out. It's title is "From Cassettes to CDs." The publishing company placed it in the drama section. Imagine that? Lookers can type in Dollie F Deaton and it will come up.
My hobbies are juggling, playing the piano and camping. What I really like doing is just hiding from everyone and sleeping or reading mysteries and westerns.
