Dolores's Story

MY LIFE SINCE PHS 1960. I have been married for 44 years. My husband, John, and I have 2 sons, Jay and Matthew. We have 5 grandchildren. John owns a company which manufactures and installs residential elevators in some of the most beautiful homes and townhomes the west coast of Florida has to offer. Our 2 sons work with their Dad in his business during the day and spend most of their nights and a lot of week-ends working in our shop on their race cars. You see, Jay and Matt are professional drag racers. Jay builds and tunes motors while Matthew takes care of the transmission and races the car. They have competed in and won national championships in the NMCA racing their Silver Bullet Mustang and in the NHRA Sport Compact Series racing a 6 cylinder, twin turbo, Toyota Celica. In this series, Matthew was the 1st racer to reach the 200 mph mark. In doing so, he won a $25,000.00 bounty posted by Summit Racing. When the boys are competing, John and I go to as many events as time allows. Racing has given us the opportunity to visit parts of the country we may not have otherwise traveled to. We have been as far east as Englishtown, NJ, as far west as Pomona, CA, and many points in between. Of all the tracks we have been to, I would have to say that The Strip in Las Vegas (across from Nellis AFB) is our very favorite. The casinos aren't bad either. I am particularly proud of the progress my sons have made through the sport of professional drag racing and what they have been able to accomplish. It's been a lot of hard work with a tremendous amount of pressure, but I would say, it's all been worth it. We all enjoy racing and racing is something we do as a family. d an appreciation of cars, especially high performance cars. In fact, we still own a 1968 Shelby GT500KR (Wimbleton White) which we purchased in 1969. When we are not working or racing, we enjoy spending time at a little beach place we own in Indian Shores, FL. It's almost a magical place where we can get away from all the hustle and bustle of daily life, enjoy the sea air, watch the sandpipers at the water's edge and completely forget about anything routine. We love having the grandkids around, sitting on the sand and watching them swim, skim board and fish. It's what our life is all about. Family. In retrospect, when I look back on my life, I realize that John and I started out with little more than nothing. His professional career started as a construction helper with Otis Elevator Company. I was working as a recreation center director. He attended eveing class and graduated from Hillsborough Community College. He then went on to the University of South Florida, again attending evening classes. During that time, he was offered a supervisory position with Otis which he accepted. After being with Otis for over 25 years, he resigned to start his own company. After raising a family, taking care of a house, being chief cook, laundress, chauffeur, baseball team Mom and whatever else I could fit into the hours between 6:00 AM and 11:30 PM, I went back to work. In 1984, I began my career as a Judicial Assistant in the Hillsborough County Court System - a position I still hold today - working for a Criminal Court Judge. I feel like I've traveled a long road since June of 1960. It has taken many twists and turns, ups and downs, but I am so thankful and feel so blessed for where it has led me.
