(posted 6/02/09 lengthy but not tragic)
On 02/27/07 woke up at 3 am with chest pain, short of breath. Didn't want to wake anyone in the middle of the night, thought it might be a rib that moves sometimes and chiropracter adjusts it back in. Took a sick day from work and ended up driving myself to ER around 3 pm (called the Dr. from home and he told me to say I had chest pain when I get to ER) I really had pain but was stubborn did not want to go in ambulance. I'll tell you, no wait in ER if you say you have chest pain. I was rushed in from the waiting room, put on a gurney and taken to a large treatment room where I think I remember eight medical people putting in 3 IV's and sonigram and sensors stuck everywhere (well not there) and it was a little scary because I'm thinking "is this how it happens just before the lights go out" if you know what I mean. Two hours later just before they were going to take me to the OR to do the catheter thing through the artery or vein to check for blockage, the senior heart man did the last check and cancelled the OR and told me the pain was Pericarditis (virus infection and inflamation around the heart causing the pain). I stayed 1 night and the non-steroid anti-inflammatory was doing the job so no permanent damage. I was going to go back to work but when I was talking to a good friend from home who lives nearby and is a nurse (Lisa Orloff Staley), she read me the riot act about all the issues she knew I was having from "aging with a spinal cord injury". I waited a while longer instead of going right back to work and I realized Lisa was right, I didn't have the energy any more. I wrestled with the idea of retiring. My DR has been pushing me to retire and I put it off for a couple years until this. It took away that reserve of energy I always needed to draw from and I couldn't push myself to my limit like I was used to doing.
Now this took place a few months before the reunion and I was using my sick time when I was in ...Expand for more
G-ville for our fantastic reunion. When I returned home I still had sick time and vacation to use while I went back and forth trying to decide what to do. Well I wanted to work at least part time (my job at the college is the best ever and missed it) but my position really required a full time person. I finally took retirement when all my sick leave and vacation was used up in March of 2008.
God has been good to me. I am fortunate that I have reasons to get up and out everyday early like to take my son to school. I have become the stay at home dad and it's okay and my wife Karen is reluctantly still working full time at the DMV. I like to do the cooking and spend time at school with the water polo and swim team which is Joey's current sport. His high school is a virtual sports machine with alumni in the NFL, MLB, and an Olympian that was 2nd by 1/100th of a second to Michael Phelps in Beijing. It's fun being around the kids. I'm the School Aquatics Treasurer. His team is never out of season, they practice and play all 12 months. So I would really like to hear from you. I'm at domanadio at the yahoo email. Check out the new pics like the ones with Joey and his school's Olympian Michael Cavic. Cavic says he is going to beat Phelps in Rome in July 2009.
One more thing before I end, if you have time, go to Burke's School Home Page and Under the tab for Message Board read the message I started for "All Burke Graduates" and please contribute if you can. If you can't find it, email me and I'll send you a link for it.

danadio at cccd. edu like to hear from you. Looking back I would say it was tough trying to gain momentum. It took until nearly my late twenties but when I got moving in the right direction it's been going forward pretty steady. Struggled in a lot of places and then moved to California in 1978. First long term employment began in 1983 with Financial/Mortgage Services. Currently at Community College School District since 1991. Retirement may be in the picture in the near future.
