Don's Story

After graduating CHS, I went to Troy State. I was a member of the Troy State University Sound of the South Band. Got my B.S. in 1970 and taught in public schools for 3 years. Made a career change to law enforcement in 1975. I earned my M.S. at Troy State University in 1998, and continued my post graduate studies at the U of Al.(Ph.D Political Science....Roll Tide)!!! In 1992, I was selected to Who's Who in American Law Enforcement and in 1997, I was selected to Who's Who Among Graduate Students in American Colleges and Universities. I was inducted into the Phi Kappa Phi National Honor Society (Troy University 1997), Alpha Phi Sigma National Criminal Justice Honor Society (1998). Alpha Sigma Phi National Political Science Honor Society (U of Ala. 2002), and Who's Who among teachers in American Colleges and Universities in 2005. I Retired from Law Enforcement in 1998. I was Capt/C.I.D. Commander for 20+ years. In addition to being in charge of major crime, narcotics and youth aid (all at the same time). I was on the 12th Judicial Circuit Homicide Task Force. The day I retired from police work, I was offered and accepted a criminal justice teaching position at Troy State University (retirement lasted 2 days!!!). 11 years later still teaching at Troy U. and I have to say I work with some of the best people in the world at the school. Married to Jan Chance in 1975. 2 kids (boy and girl). First grandchild born May, 29,2009, Brennan Donald Brown...Expand for more
, 6 lbs 2 ounces and he is my "Pride and Joy"!! I also own a stringed instrument music store in Troy,Al (since 1992)called Flattops and Fiddles. I enjoy playing Bluegrass, Country and Bluegrass Gospel music. I play acoustic guitar with my treasured HD-28 Cocobolo wood Martin guitar (the only one in existence) and the 5 string banjo. The guitar was a 10th anniversary gift from my wife (got it long before I went into the guitar business and became an Authorized Martin Dealer. I named it Boudreax and if it could talk it would probably confess to my wife that instead of studying for my Ph.D. with my best friend Stark Laney, many times we went to all night bluegrass pickins and beerfests (nothin goes better with gospel music than a cold Miller Lite)!!! My wife (soul mate and best friend) and I enjoy traveling. When I attend terrorism seminars overseas she accompanies me on the trips. We will be celebrating out 34th wedding anniversay on July 18. I plan on retiring from teaching and my retail business within the next 2 years. As long as our health remains good we want to continue our traveling to different countries throughout the world and go to as many National Parks in the U.S. as we can. I thought I was the only 1967 CHS Red Devil left alive until I saw the class reunion pictures on classmates.com. Everyone looked great. I am looking forward to seeing them soon at the 60th birthday celebration (Thanks Gail Wynn for organizing the bash).
