Made it through the Dallas White Rock Marathon and bettered my time to 4:52.
It was not that much easier than the first one, but I made it. Had a great time.
For the past few years I have become more interested in running. I started out doing it to stay in shape plus the fact that I kept getting hurt all the time when I played basketball or baseball. About a year ago I joined a group for runners called the Waco Striders. Their membership has a wide range of age and skill level. Before joining the group I had never run more than a 5k distance race. Now I have run two half marathons and in April 2009 I ran and finished at the Oklahoma City Marathon. It's a very inspirational race. The proceeds from the race help fund the memorial for the bombing victims. When you start the race, the relatives of those who passed away are there to thank and encourage you. There are folks cheering you along for all the 26.2 miles. By the time I got near the end I needed all the encouragement I could get. My feet and ankles were asking me why I thought this was a good idea. I hoped to finish under 5 hours. When I got within sight of the finish line, I had about two mintes to spare. As I got closer an announcer ...Expand for more
called out my name and told everyone to help me finish my first marathon. There was huge crowd at the finish line. When the folks started cheering I started pumping my fist in the air and forgot about how bad my feet hurt. I made it with a time of 4:59:03. Finishers medals are given to all those who complete the race. I gave mine to my Dad because he always encouraged me in all my endeavors.
I going to run another one in the fall, the Dallas White Rock Marathon.
Graduated from Sam Houston State University in 1977. Roomed with Marcus Barefield. Went to work for Santa Fe Railroad in 1980 and been with them ever since. Traveled everywhere the railroad was located. Met my wife Judy while working in Ft.Madison, IA. We lived in Alvin, Houston and now in McGregor, TX for the last 24 years. We've have a son and a daughter and two grandchildren. Two Austrailian shepherds too. I still do some art work and now my job allows me to telecommute from home. Went to the 35 year reunion and had a great time visiting with folks I went to school with from first grade through high school. Thinking about moving back to Port Lavaca. My parents and brothers still live there out at six mile. Looking forward to the next reunion.
