Don's Story
Most of my old friends at East may remember me as an electronics geek and an avid musician. Band, orchestra, brass choir, jazz ensemble. Plus messing around with ham radio. That's pretty much how I still am, but the details have changed, of course.
After graduating from East, I went down to Purdue to study engineering, and to be in their band and orchestra programs. Went back to U.W. Madison for grad school. Didn't get my Master's degree until a year after leaving campus, because I had spent too many weekends having fun caoneing, skiing, bicycling, building ham radio projects, etc. (Somehow talking to people on the radio was never as interesting as building the equipment.)
My first wife died in 1989, and two years later I married a woman who likes messing around with music as much as I do. She's the person who introduced me to Celtic music. We got involved in a casual string "pick-up band," but it was so laid-back that we decided it would be fun to have a serious band.
I had gotten to know some musicians through running an invasive weed control program in the ...Expand for more
woodlands of our local park. In 2003 we decided to try launching the band with our "weeding" friends, and "The Garlic Mustard Pickers" was the obvious choice for the band name. This year we finally decided we might be good enough to do a "beer tent" gig at Milwaukee's Irish Fest. Our application got turned down, but we received encouragement to apply again next year. Meanwhile, we're regulars at other venues like Milwaukee's Folk Fair and the "Music in the Parks" series.
These days I also provide string bass backup for a bluegrass jam that meets twice a month in the southeast suburbs of Milwaukee. (If you are in Milwaukee and you like casual bluegrass, you should check out Fixx Coffee House in St. Francis, 2nd & 4th Tuesdays.)
Did we have the word "nerd" for people like me back when we were in high school?
My favorite teachers in high school: Garrison Lincoln (he ran the radio club) and Mr. Ellenbecker (physics). Teachers who had biggest impact on me: Shirley Kaub (Latin - she's the teacher who taught me how to study), and Miss Duval (who taught me how to write).
