Don's Story
Life
Don Oliver is a 44 year veteran of the fire service. He began his career as a firefighter with the Wichita Kansas Fire Department in March 1967. As a member of the Thornton, Colorado Fire Department from 1973-1992, his ranks included Lieutenant, Training Officer, Assistant Chief and Chief of the Department. He has served as the Chief of the Wilson Fire/Rescue Service (North Carolina) since March of 1992.
Chief Oliver is considered to be a ÃÂÃÂbleeding-edgeÃÂÃÂ leader in the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for public safety. He has been a invited speaker numerous conferences including, the International City/County Managers Association (ICMA), International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC), International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP), Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI) Homeland Security Summit, International Crime Mapping Research Conference, IAFC-Microsoft Fire Service Technology Symposium.

tor-at-large of the National Society of Executive Fire Officers (NSEFO) as well as past President (1996-2004) and a member of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). He serves as a member of the Board of Visitors for the National Fire Academy.
Chief Oliver is a graduate of Columbia College (Missouri) with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Individual Studies with a concentration in fire service administration. He also is a 1988 graduate of the National Fire Academy's Executive Fire Officer Program (EFOP) and the Management Excellence Program at the Center for Public Service , University of Virginia.
He and Linda (Scherer) met in 1971 on the Wichita Fire Department where Linda was a fire dispatcher. They were married in January, 1973 in Conifer, Colorado. They moved to Colorado in March, 1973. After retiring from the Thornton, Colorado in 1992, Don accepted the position of Fire Chief in Wilson, NC, and is presently serving in that position. Linda is the Executive Officer of the Wilson Board of REALTORS. They have 9 grandchildren...5 boys...4 BEAUTIFUL girls.
