John's Story

Life Lived in Patterson Township, my dad was manager of Montgomery Ward store on 7th Ave. Went to junior high at Highland Jr. high. Moved from Beaver Falls 2 mo. before graduation. Graduated from Monongahela HS. In the summer of 69 I entered the Army for 3 years. I served with honor with the HHC 39th EngineerBattalion(Combat) at Chulai, Vietnam for one year. Also 1 year with the 67th Trans. Co. in Germany. I worked for 8 years with Ideal Trucking in Ontario, CA and Nogales,AZ. Then I had my own truck repair business for 3 years also in Ontario and Nogales.I then went to work in the shop as a mechanic for Ayers and Maddux Inc, an international trucking company in Nogales,AZ. Transfered to Laredo Texas Terminal of Ayeres and Maddux as terminal manager and shop manager. I married Mary Gallegos of Laredo TX in 1988. I worked 2 years as shop forman for the local Kenworth dealer service dept. and now I am working for a construction co., Pete Gallegos Paving Inc., as shop manager for the trucking division. Military July 1967 attended basic training at Ft. Jackson, S.C. Went to AIT at Ft. Belvoir Army Engineer School for generator operator/ mechanic. A...Expand for more
rrived in Vietnam Jan 1968 and asssigned to the 18th Engineer Bde., 45th Group. The day before the Tet offensive was assigned to 39th Engineer Battalion(Combat) 3 days later arrived at ChuLai and was assigned to HHC of the 39th. Went to work in Bn. Maint. in the generator maint. shop of the engineer section under MSG Pettingill. I replaced Sp5 Bob Holbert. I was trained for working on small engines, electric motors and water purification units. Worked in Chu Lai and traveled north and south to water points and line company locations at LZ Dottie, LZ Dragon, LZ Snoopy, Hill 10, Tam Ky and LZ Young. I am now secretary of the Society of Vietnam Veterans Alumni 39th Engineer Battalion. Contact me for a news letter and news of reunions. We have located more than 130 former members of the 39th and attached companies. I also am a member of the Americal Division Association and attent reunions there in search of former 39thers. After Vietnam in March 1969 was assigned to 47th Air Defense Group at Homestead air Force Base. I worked two weeks operating generators at a Hawk missle site south of the base and then 4 months operating generators at the Air Defense Command Post for South Florida. In July of 69 was sent to Germany for my final year where I served with the 67th Transportation Company in Bremerhaven as a truck driver then as a mechanic in maintance.
