Don's Story
After HS I worked at the local Montgomery Wards and then joined the US Naval Air Reserves serving approximately 3 years on active and learning the electronic trade. I served in an A-6 squadron based at NAS Oceana (VA Beach) working on specialized surveillance equipment. I met my squadron in port of Athens Greece where the USS Independence was harbored as part of the 6th Fleet. I did two MED Cruises seeing Rome, Paris, Barcelona, London, Monaco, and Naples. I was married to the former Martha Eileen Bell, a 1970 graduate of Wooten.
My first job after active duty was with a Silicon Valley based Gov’t contractor making “listening devices” or spook stuff in their Gaithersburg factory. Martha and I separated and I decided to return to college so I took a job selling real estate while I attended Montgomery College. I eventually took a job with Maryland Fire Equipment Co designing and selling engineered fire suppression systems.
During that time, I was now attending the U of MD and had met my second wife, the former Patricia Marie Powell. We lived in the old Gude Nursery development until our separation and divorce in 2000. Pat and I started a home security company which was merged to start Bank Design & Equipment. over VA and MD.
Pat have two children; Kristen and Matt. Kristen earned a BS in biology at Coastal Carolina and is the co-host of Best of America by Horseback on RFDTV network and operates the family farm in Culpeper VA. Matt graduated with honors of the L’Academie de Cuisine and currently is a sous chef at Jack Rose. His work has been featured in the Washingtonian.
I moved to the Vero Beach, FL area on 2005 to be close to family; my mom passed in 2007 and dad is 92. I work for a small county as an IT administrator. When I’m not working I enjoy flying, Civil Air Patrol, Shriners activities, and watching old movies. My partner, Barb and I have two rescue dogs and a rescue cat. We have a small home with a solar heated pool which much of the year is at or above 90 deg!
I get to Virginia almost every year to visit the farm and family and occasionally venture into MD. My daughter drove me around our old neighborhood last summer and I thought I was in a different part of the country – everything was so grown! I’m still in contact with a couple of classmates by FB and speak occasionally to Woody Vashaw the Science / Physics/ Aviation Studies teacher. Woody and were neighbors while I attended RHS and I purchased his Cessna 150 from him in the late 70’s.
