Donald Brooks:

CLASS OF 1970
Cincinnati, OH

Donald's Story

Been quite a few places these last few years. Tried some college at Univ of Kentucky which didn’t work out too well so joined the Air Force in 1973 (very low draft number….remember those?). After the AF worked as Altec Lansing sound engineer in the Tri state area. I decided it was too much travel (always on the road for weeks at a time ) so joined McDonnell Aircraft in St Louis MO but travelled anyway ending up living overseas in Germany for about 4 years. Another long term assignment sent me and my family to Japan for a few years. Then an opportunity to become a US Government civilian popped up so stayed overseas until 1998 . I got tired of living as an expat 13 of the last 16 years so volunteered to return to the US. Managed to visit more than 30 countries but wanted to try something else. Ended up working for the Secretary of the Air Force in The Pentagon. And yes, I was there on 9/11, my office was pretty close to the impact area but 125 folks died that day so I was one of the fortunate ones. The long days and long commute in DC traffic eventually wore on my family (but I didn’t travel!) so moved to Tinker AF base in Oklahoma where I managed a lot of people but it wasn’t satisfying being a bureaucrat. That desk job bored me to tears….so I left the Gov saving the taxpayer some $$ in the process. Eventually I moved to Grand Rapids Michigan to work for L-3 Avionics in 2008 but with the bank collapses got laid off shortly thereafter so….travelled to Hood R...Expand for more
iver Oregon to work for a small company making Unmanned Air Vehicle systems….most folks call them drones. Very satisfying providing overwatch to keep out troops safe overseas and catch bad-guys. We expanded to the US Coast Guard and make headlines identifying drug traffickers. I decided there were too many trees and way too much ice around Oregon so got the itch to work remote in a drier climate and moved an hour outside of Las Vegas this past year where I’m actually closer to Death Valley National Park than The Strip. After my jobs as a sound man supporting rock concerts and all that Washington DC traffic I’m finally in a slower paced area….I now live surrounded by sage brush and jack rabbits. Along the way I managed to have two boys with my first wife who live the St Louis area. I picked up another son when I remarried but he decided to stay in Oklahoma. The boys don’t understand why dad keeps moving around but that’s just how I am. My current wife is a naturalized citizen supporting my nomadic tendencies so that’s fine with me. I picked up a Bachelor’s degree in Aeronautics from Embry-Riddle when I was 34 (late bloomer) and my Master’s in Economics for my 50th…a real late bloomer. But I love to read and study new things. I currently work in Cybersecurity each and every day….loving it. Retire? Probably not….too much fun learning new things and getting paid. I try to keep a very low profile...no Facebook, Twitter, and can't believe I'm posting this online.
