Donald's Story

Here is a letter to I wrote to Heidi (a Cubberley graduate) in July 2008 that describes life since Cubberley: Thanks for the update, It's great to find out what happened to some of the Cubberley crowd (I'm glad you emailed, the commercial site (Classmates) I find very corporate weird; once I started answering the profile questions and had to stop I thought they were going to ask what my favorite TV show was (got no TV). It's great that you are still in touch with Jodi and you both are still dancing (at least into the 1980's) - Amsterdam is a cool city and it must be fantastic for Jodi to live in a country not governed by the Bush Monarchy. My daughter (Marisha) did a few semesters there as an exchange student from Cooper Union; she loved it and even speaks some Dutch. She is now 27 years old, and doing natural building, art and architecture projects (thenaturalbuilders is her web site). She is way cool and Era and I love it that she has relocated from New York to the Bay Area. I go to Belgium a lot as I invented a way of making weave files for art tapestries that are woven there. Era and I travel a lot; I missed the 30 year Cubberley reunion because we were in Turkey - the photo I posted (don't think I really look li...Expand for more
ke that) of Era and me was taken two years ago in Southern Spain. It is really sad about (my brother) Roger, he was a great, interesting, passionate and creative guy, very influential in my life. His kids grew up with a second father (a restaurant owner in Chicago) the youngest (John) doesn't even remember Roger; but he looks like a hunky, handsome version of Roger and shares so many of his abilities. Sara, his oldest is brilliant (now divorced) and working for a headhunter. In a nutshell: I got my BFA at the San Francisco Art Institute (semester at Art Institute of Chicago) - worked in paper conservation, got another job in a hand litho art shop - started a handmade paper mill (1974) , got married (to Era Hamaji 1979), same year built a handmade papermill in Africa (Dar es Salaam), had Marisha (1980) got a MA degree for UC Berkeley, over the years taught (CCAC, UC Berkeley, Univ Hawaii, UC Davis, SF State) the papermill grew into an art publishing studio (Magnolia Editions - web sit has the same name), invented a way to make weave files for the new Los Angeles Cathedral 1999, started collaborating with my wife making art - and ah.. here I am... in Oakland California. Come visit next time you are down this way.
