Donald's Story

I joined the U.S. Navy after high school and was stationed at the Naval Air Station in Washington, DC in 1960 when I met my wife, Bonnie. We married in 1961 and I was assigned sea duty aboard the USS Enterprise which participated in the Cuban Crisis in Oct-Dec 1962. While I was at sea my first child, Michael, was born. After receiving an honorable discharge in May 1963, we decided to remain in the DC area and I became a driver-salesman for Hostess Cakes from which I retired in 1996. We moved into a new home in Laurel, Maryland in 1965 and are still living in it today. In 1963 I became interested in numismatics and began a penny collection which has grown to broader interests in coins and I attend numerous coin shows on the eastern coast of the USA. We eventually got two daughters, Dawn and Starr, and another son, Steven. While they were growing up we spent two weeks each summer on a family camping trip and stayed in 32 states before the children decided they no longer wanted to be gypsies. :o) We then bough...Expand for more
t a time-share and the wife and I have traveled to many places of interest including visiting each of the countries where our ancestors came from. We lost Michael in an auto accident in 1985 and the very next day our foreign exchange daughter, Gianna, arrived from Uruguay and spent the 1985-86 school year with us. Years later she returned and married her senior prom date and is now a U S citizen. We consider her two children to be our grandchildren along with 11 who were born to our three surviving natural children. Our first great-granddaughter was born in June 2009 and our first great-grandson is due August 2011. Our latest interest is traveling to lighthouses and keeping a scrapbook of the many beautiful photographs we have taken including several in Ohio located along Lake Erie. In June 2011 we celebrated our Golden Wedding Anniversary by renewing our vows in church and then spending a week vacationing with 20 members of our family at Williamsburg, VA. Many fond memories of watching them all interacting!
