Donald's Story
I flunked out of UCI (cannot solve a calculus word problem to this day). Eventually I went back to Santa Ana Junior College (SAC), and picked up some useful stuff, like word processing and spreadsheets. All very useful stuff. Then I competed the general education requirements and eventually picked up my Junior College degrees in Electronics (1985) and Mathematics (1990).
Every time I think I have selected a major, I change my mind again. I have taken courses in computer programming, music, mathematics, and engineering. My transcript from SAC actually shows that I was awarded a junior college level degree in engineering (1989), but they only actually give diplomas for one each, arts and sciences.
Well, in the late 1990's, I decided to make a go of it, and get a bachelorâÂÂs degree in something! There was a college nearby that offered courses in business (another mood swing, I suppose), with opportunities for working people to get a college diploma. I said to myself, enough of these mood swings, I am going to finish this off. So I actually went to the University of Phoenix (UOP) campus nearby, and accomplished a degree in Business Management. Tommy Lasorda was the guest speaker at my graduation (he was a great speaker, and a great kind of guy), with some words of eloquence and wisdom to impart to us all. I actually shook his hand on the way out of the ceremony, and said my little, âÂÂGreat Speech, Tommy. Loved Every M...Expand for more
inute!â UOP does not actually have the authority to convey a Ph.D. (bachelors and masters only, at the campus I was attending here in Sunny California) but they gave Tommy an honorary Ph.D. anyway. He said he had enough of those things to cover his bedroom wall. And do you know what? I believed him!
My degree in business was actually issued on December 31, 1997. My birthday is also New YearâÂÂs Eve. Not many graduates have diplomas that were issued on their birthdays!
I spent eighteen years of my life working at an electronics power supply company called LH Research. Times got pretty rough. We moved from a 120,000 square feet place in Tustin, right off Walnut (all those streets go through now) to a 30,000 sq.-ft place in Costa Mesa. We were bought out by a company in Tucson, Arizona. Their management was just as bad as ours! The place fell like a stone. The company (long and short of the story) was folded. I went to work for one of their competitors. The companyâÂÂs name is Cherokee International. That company decided to outsource their production to Shanghai China in September of 2009. I have been working as a temp for various companies as an Inspector, since those are the only kinds of jobs available right now in the quality assurance field, and very few employers are hiring direct. Ces't La Vie. At least I am employed. A lot of people I know are out of work with little chance of gaining a job.
That is all for now!
