Donald's Story

Life After graduation, I went to Kent State where I graduated Magna cum laude and was named Outstanding Accounting Graduate in 1958. Was drafted into the Army, then joined Arthur Andersen & Co.; passed CPA Exam (placing First in Ohio and Honorable Mention in USA). Had two daughters, then a brain aneurysm almost cost my life. Had to change jobs; spent a couple of years as Asst Controller of an AMEX corporation; wife left with children; I came back to Canton and taught Business and Accounting at Stark State College for 25 years. Now retired in small apartment; have few activities but wish I could do more with old friends., but hav some physical limitations, and have lost my ambition. Two daughters living in Columbus and one adult granddaughter. Sold my musical instruments many years ago, and have not played in 60 years, but I still love music. In the twenty years away from Canton I lost touch with many old friends, and would enjoy seeing them again. Far too many have passed away already. I seldom drive much and don’t see anyone any more so I guess I am almost a hermit in my (dirty) apartment in Jackson Township. At Timken High, my biggest love was music and I was fortunate enough to play both clarinet and tenor sax and play in all three of the groups - Marching Band; Orchestra; and Stage Band. Mr. Armitage was a tremendous inspiration, and one of the finest individuals I have ever met. I was in Accounting, but was more into music and the instructor did not particularly like me coming late to class due to practice, etc. I liked most of my teachers, particularly W. W. Graening, who I had the pleasure of seeing again when he taught some courses at Stark Technical College where I also taught, and Barbara Graham, who also taught at Stark Tech for a short time. Many others on the faculty and staff were friendly and helpful, including Joe Guerra who I never had for a class. Those were truly the 'Good Old Days,' and several friends from the Band were very helpful to me in going on to college. In particular, I remember Jerry DeAngelis and Danny Pelligrino who talked me into going to Kent State. There isn't room to name all of the others I counted as good friends from both the music area and the Accounting class. I miss them all, and the good times of those years. After graduation from Timken Vocational High School I worked for a little over a year to save some money, then enrolled at Kent State. Was fortunate to have friends like Jerry DeAngelis and Danny Pelligrino...Expand for more
there ahead of me to help me with a place to live and transportation back home on weekends. After they left, I worked at various jobs (cooks helper, dishwasher, and waiter) the last couple of years, and joined a group called the Collegiates. Graduated in 1958, magna cum laude, and was named the Outstanding Accounting Graduate of that year. Was drafted into the Army later that year. Workplace After military service, I joined the international accounting firm of Arthur Andersen & Co. in their Cleveland office. Began in auditing and was promoted to senior accountant, then transferred to the Small Business Division. Sat for, and passed on the first attempt, the CPA Exam, placing First in Ohio, with Honorable Mention in the US. Became a manager in about 4-½ years and took part in both local office training and teaching in the firm's international auditing school for newly hired staff, in Chicago, for several years. In early 1970, I suffered an aneurysm of a brain artery and was off work for several months. Had to leave public accounting, which I loved, and became Assistant Controller of an AMEX corporation, Ohio Sealy Mattress Co. After that company was taken over by another group, and having lost my family, I returned to Canton, Ohio. I taught at Kent State, main campus, one year then was contacted by Stark Technical College to teach in the Business Division. Spent twenty-five years at Stark Tech (now Stark State College) and retired in 2000. Now fully retired, but living in an apartment, I do not seek another job, but could probably be enticed to work part-time in something that would allow me to use my education and accounting background. Military After graduation from college my draft classification of 1-A made it impossible to find a career position. I was drafted within five months and did Basic Training at Fort Knox. Since I had a business degree, I was sent to the Adjutant General's school outside Indianapolis, and had to learn shorthand. When I applied to go overseas, the Army (in its usual way) sent me to Third Army Hq, outside of Atlanta. With a Secret clearance, I spent a pretty good year and a half at Third Army Hq. Was named 'soldier-of-the-month' the day I was separated from active duty. My final discharge came shortly before things got bad in Vietnam, so I fortunately missed that combat. Now I am just a lonely OLD man who does little except attend Cardiac rehab, after a very mild lncident some years ago and a 31 day hospital stay in 2014.
