Donald's Story

Military I joined the United States Marine Corps on May 29th 1989, after living in Phoenix Arizona for about a year. I was the recruiters wet dream I suppose. I walked right in and said "Sign me up". My parents thought I was lying when I told them that I was leaving. Even though the recruiter came to the house several times for me to sign some paperwork they did not believe. In fact the hard realization of it came at 0430 the morning I left, when the door bell rang and I was gone. I attended boot camp in San Diego California and graduated on Aug 25th with platoon 3041. My senior drill instructor was SSgt Tuthill and our heavy was Sgt Dietchi. From there I was sent to MCT at Camp Pendleton Ca. I dont remember much due the fatigue and high paced training. Although we did get some libbo but the adventures are vague, but I do remember walking alot. In Sept. of the same year I attended MOS school at Court House Bay Jacksonville NC. Then was assigned to 8th Engineer Support Batallion, Camp Lejeune. Rather quickly at the flip of a coin I was reassigned to MSSG-24 and spent the next 18 Months in the Meddeteranian Sea. I participated in Desert Storm with this unit and have a picture in the Marine Corps History Book. In December of 1993 I recieved orders to Marine Corps Base Hawaii, BSSG-1, which was shortly renamed CSSG-3. I spent 4 years there with minimal deployments to anywhere. I served as a Platoon Sgt, Training NCO, Embark NCO, Floor Chief, Maintenance Chief, etc.... Mostly I learned to surf the waters of Hawaii and I met my current wife there in 1995. In 1997 I was sent back to Camp Lej. and participated in 2 disaster relief operations. One in Nicaragua(where I caught Malaria) and the other in Puerto Rico. After 2 short years back at 8th ESB I recieved orders to Marine Corps Engineer School. I spent 4 and 1/...Expand for more
2 years there training students, Chiefs and officers. I even went to Africa for a few weeks to test prototype water purification equipment. In July of 2004, I was relocated to Okinawa Japan. I deployed to Sri Lanka, and then to Iraq. I am currently as I write this, serving in Jacksonville Florida until May 2007. I joined the corps because it is the hardest, toughest, most painful thing someone can do. If I had to do it again I would without a second thought. I have had the priveledge of seeing over 25 different countries and cultures, Ive participated in 7 real world events that have made a significant impact on government and the peoples views. Most importantly I have met some of the finest warriors known to man kind. You will never get this from a civilian job.(not that I know of) Writing a military bio is not the easiest thing to do especially when your limited to the characters. I want to make sure that I address some people that are important to me before I run out of space. Tom Claudio-Diaz(GySgt Retired): You will always be family. You are my brother. Thank you for mentoring, protecting, and teaching me. Raul Mercado(LCpl): You made the ultimate sacrafice for your unit and country. So many will miss you. Rest in piece. God speed and Semper Fi. Ken Overbaugh(GySgt Retired): Words for you Ken are difficult. You helped me maintain some sanity. You have all of my respect. You are truly an example setter. Thanks for all you have done form myself and family. Billy always asks about you. "Preacher on a HARLEY!" LOL If anyone ever reads this I would like to add that there are a few folks I wouldnt mind hearing from: such as ,,,, Kim O'shell, Amy Osman, Bill Sech, Debbie Tomasick, Rob Vargay, Kieth Sulkowski, Gregg Sanders, Lisa Thomas.. well, hope all are well and I apologize for waisting your time...
