Donald (Dan)'s Story

After graduation Joel Bargabus and I took a road trip which ended in a car crash in Washington State. We limped home, I with broken ribs! Later that summer, the 1970 draft lottery came along, my number was 4 - I joined the Air Force, boot camp in San Antonio TX, Tech school in Denver CO, and then spent the rest of my time at Nellis AFB in Las Vegas! After the Air Force I traveled around the US working odd jobs in the North East and Florida. Traveling back to California I worked for awhile in SoCal with John Bargabus and Lyle Haley. Joel was living in San Diego at the time, he and I left for another road trip to Wyoming. Joel continued on to Kansas for work and I stayed in Wyoming driving a cab in Cheyenne. I also worked in the oil fields around Gillette Wyoming. In January 1974, I got back together with the Bargabus brothers and Lyle in Denver Colorado where we swung hammers. We all lived in a barn there for a short time. Joel and I then moved to Casper Wyoming where we installed Cable TV. Housing was short in Casper and we lived in a tent for a month when first there. We left Casper to go back to San Diego and continued to work in cable TV for a year. Joel and I then moved to Santa Cruz and did overhead cable construction. In the summer of 1975 our house mate, Chester, was killed in a work accident... I decided to go back to school. I moved back to Cheyenne Wyoming to attend a Community College. I also drove a dump truck for a concrete company and worked as a crusher operator at a rock quarry. I married my first wife in Cheyenne in 1977. We moved to Montana where I continued my education at the University of Montana in Missoula. My first wife and I split in 1978 and I was out of school for two years. I sold vacuum cleaners, worked on a steel gang for the Burlington Northern railroad and in the woods for the US Forest Service in Seeley Lake and Plains Montana. I continued to work for...Expand for more
the Forest Service seasonally and went to school at UM in the off season. I graduated from the University of Montana with a degree in Forestry in 1983. I worked for the US Forest Service on the Lolo National Forest around Plains/Thompson Falls Montana setting up Timber sales and fighting forest fires in Montana, Idaho, Oregon and California as crew boss and strike team leader. I left the Forest Service in 1987 and worked as an independent Forester in the Belt mountains of central Montana for awhile. In 1990, I started working with the Wyoming Department of Transportation in Cheyenne where I still work and administer the departments Asset Management software. I married my wife Lois, a nurse, in 1997. I have two step kids, Ami and Jonathan, both married and a grandchild, Joshua. My daughter Ami's husband is currently deployed in Afghanistan. We love the Rocky Mountains where we often hike and camp at various locations in the summer. In winter we vacation in the southwest and South Padre Island TX. My sister Vicki (Fremont -1968) is retired and lives here in Cheyenne and my brother Jim (Fremont -1971) lives in Sacramento. I hope all my old friends from Pippin, Ellis, Mango and Fremont are doing well! Dan UPDATES - I retired after 26 years with the Wyoming Transportation Department on July 29, 2016, the day I turned 65. I run on-line football pools and have members from all over the country. I also do Bonzai and work in my yard. My wife, lois, is still working as a Nursing Supervisor for the County Health dept. We travel when we can. We still camp and hike. I now have three grandsons. Josh 10, Anduin 2 both from my step-son Jon. My daughter Ami has a son Lucca who will turn 1 in January. All still live here in Cheyenne. I will attend the Class of 1970's 50th reunion in Oct. 2020. My sister Vicki (1968) still lives in Cheyenne. My brother Jim (1971) has retired and moved back to SoCal.
