Donald's Story

Graduated Edison, went to TU. Felt trapped. Enraged about Vietnam War. Wanted to join protests. Took "Engineering" first semester. Realized I didn't want to be an engineer. Took business. Frustrated with life, the war, and Walter Cronkites Death Counts. Went part time to TU and worked at the Tulsa Juvenile Detention Center..knowing full well, I'd be drafted. Drafted in 1970, sent to Ft. Polk. The training conditions were horrendous. Poor food, four hours sleep, freezing after forced marches. Majority in company got Upper Respiratory Infection..a few got spinal meningitis. Developed stress fractures in right foot..because of trick knee. Kept marching..didn't want to be recycled. Foot bones finally separated...put in walking cast..kept marching, and qualified with M16..so, I "graduated" and put in finance. Through luck I never went over. The company I wound up in was like "F" troop. A rowdy bunch of crazy draftees. I was very fortunate. One day I met Gus Gaither at the headquarters building...I believe he was outprocessing. Had just returned from Nam. I gave him a big hello...he looked at me expressionless...all he said...as he passed me..."don't ever go over there"..Gus...I hope you are having a good life. I know you won't be able to forget what you experienced, but I hope life treated you well after that. I got out in 1971, early out..War was "winding down". Came back to Tulsa..hated the idea of returning to "TU". And the GI BILL only paid for books, until the protesters forced our "beloved" government to help returning veterans...I joined th...Expand for more
e Tulsa Police Force...it was the only job available...had a great experience there...one year. Then I went back to college...Took the Federal Service Test...got called for an interview..accepted...thank goodness I had enough hours to graduate. If not I wouldn't have been able to accept the job offer. I wound up in Iowa for too many years...working for the department of the Army..how Ironic. Then was transferred to Orlando Florida. In my job I was able to travel overseas..Germany, Korea, Sweden. Retired Early... just in time to help my parents while my father fought liver cancer. When he passed I was able to bring my mom to Orlando to my home. She loves it here. I am blessed. I have had a few absolute horrors happen in life.....but answered prayers saved me from total destruction. My life became better after each disaster. I shouldn't have survived. I have to call the events that saved me "miracles"...I'd be a fool to try to explain them as coincidences....I hope to write about it all..to give others hope...especially with whats going on today. And that's it...my second attempt at writing something about my life...hopefully some day you'll see me hawking my book on the Today Show..I hope life has been good to you all...and you were able to conquer any mountains you had to climb. If you read my profile..PLEASE .don't choose to delete that you did visit..that's a bit of a cop out...and a bit immature considering our age now.....even if you didn't know me at Edison..and I just saw 2012 movie...the CGI's are getting better. This movie was amazing.
