Donna's Story

I certainly have covered a lot of ground since 1965. After we left Alaska in March 1965 (just short of getting to walk the stage), my dad was assigned to the University of North Dakota ROTC. We lived in Grand Forks, ND for one year and believe me, the weather was worse than any weather we had in Alaska! Dad's next assignment was Fort Gordon, GA . We lived in Augusta, GA where I met and married my first husband and had two daughters. During that time I got an AA at Georgia Military College and a BS in Public Administration at Brenau University. I was married almost 25 years before divorcing in 1990. In 1993, I married the love of my life, Buzz Bowden, who is a retired Army Colonel. Buzz has two grown children and together we have 8 grandchildren - my six boys and his two girls! We have one who graduated from college this year, one who is a sophomore at the University of Georgia, one who starts kindergarten this year, and the rest are in-between!!. I worked for the Department of Army at Fort Gordon for several years until my position was privatized and contracted out. I went to work for the contractor and when my husband retired, I quit work and started a successful consulting business. I now work for defense contractors trying to win contracts similar to the one I worked on. I am a subject matter expert (SME) and technical writer in the logistics (supply and transportation, etc.) and facilities maintenance arenas. It's a GREAT life. We have a 41' diesel pusher motorhome and we travel extensively for pleasure and for my work. My husband is fully retired, so he is my driver, housekeeper, cook, best friend and soul mate! He has a very similar background, so he often...Expand for more
reviews and critiques my work. In the past, we spent almost a year living at a RV resort on the beach in Florida while I worked for a defense contractor in the area, and recently we spent 6 weeks in Colorado Springs while I worked for a client at that location. I normally work for one client out of Charlotte, NC, and I can usually work from my home, but some clients prefer for me to be on site during certain stages of the proposal. I hope to do this 2 more years, but with the economy going in the tank, I may stretch it out a little longer. We have a nice home on 3 acres of land in a little country neighborhood in eastern Georgia between Augusta and Macon. We are situated between three of our four grown children - We love our children and we are close enough to get to them in an hour or so, but far enough that they don't just drop in on us every day! Our fourth child is 6 hours away in Virginia with her Navy chief husband and 2 sons. Our next trip is to a military reunion in September at Destin, FL for a week. In October we will meet 10 other "big kids" in their "big rigs" at Disney World's Fort Wilderness Campground for a week of fun! We do this every other year and have such a great time! I guess "camping" has been in my blood most of my life - we camped up the ALCAN highway in 1962, and back down in 1965. I had RVs when my girls were growing up and they thought everyone camped! My husband's children also grew up camping. I have not been back to Alaska since 1965, but we talk often about making the trip - just not too sure if it's going to be in the motorhome via the Alaska Highway or if we're going to do the flight/inside passage cruise route. Suggestions??
