Gabrielle's Story

Life I love to travel and recently returned from visiting Costa Rica, and am planning to visit the Philippines and Singapore soon. I am an avid SCUBA diver with advanced certifications including Rescue Diver, Science Diver, and Divemaster. I enjoy just about anything outdoors including hiking, kayaking, golfing, and bicycling. I also love car racing and even have racing certification with Skip Barber Racing thanks to a generous gift from an ex-boyfriend. I also love to spend time with family and friends. My Passion Life is too short, so we should all enjoy it while we are here. I live by the Golden Rule, always treating others as I would like to be treated. My personal passion is to help bring educational opportunities to people who need it most- the homebound disabled and people living in poverty. My Pets They are adorable, brother and sister, both with long hair and 15 yrs. old. Sammy looks kind of like Sylvester (black and white) and Cassie is a beautiful calico with unique markings. My Family I have never been married and have no children. I am now at the point in my life where I am ready to meet Mr. Right, though. It takes some of us longer than others to get to this point. :) I am very close to my family including my adorable 6-year-old nephew. My brother David, who also went to XHS, is a firefighter and is happily married. My mother and father, though divorced, are doing great and we are all very close. School I grew up in the military and always felt like an outsider in my high school. I couldn't wait to move away! I went to FSU and absolutely loved it. Tallahassee felt like home, so I decided to make roots there. I think the hardships of living in Xenia as a teenager made me appreciate everything that I have now. I do have some good memories of high school, though I am amazed I survived some of the things that happened there. There were some great teachers at XHS who inspired me. I also had some good friends. Big Brothers/Big Sisters showed me the value of an education, as did the contrasting lives I lived in my teen years (half the year travelling Europe living the good life with my dad, the other half the year living in poverty in Ohio with my mom and brother). I never dated anyone in my high school, though a few asked me out at...Expand for more
our last reunion. Funny how life changes.... College College was a fantastic experience for me, and I couldn't get enough of it. I had wonderful teachers in the College of Communication and the College of Education. I worked full time to pay my way through school and didn't really have time for a relationship, though I have lifelong friends from college. I still love to learn, so even though I completed my doctorate Dec. 2003, I am still taking classes...mainly advanced SCUBA and oceanography courses. Fun! GO FLORIDA STATE UNIVERSITY SEMINOLES!!!! Workplace I earned my doctorate and left my position on the faculty at the U.S. Military Academy in fall 2003 to move back to warm, sunny Florida. I am so glad to not have to shovel snow any more! I own a successful consulting firm specializing in human performance technology, instructional systems design, and technology-mediated learning. I also manage a Department of Homeland Security project to train port security personnel around the United States. I am on the faculty at Florida State University. I recently co-authored a chapter in an Instructional Systems book on "How to Find a Job in Business and Industry." I have also presented numerous papers, especially dealing with my dissertation topic, "The Effects of Technology-Mediated Instructional Strategies on Motivation, Performance, and Self-Directed Learning." My research took place at the U.S. Military Academy. My background is in the media- primarily the television business- where I started out in production and was also a news reporter, I owned a video production company, and I managed 4 TV stations over the years. I did (and still do) a great deal of web design and development. I also worked for 3 state agencies including as head of training and development. Military I was recruited by the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, NY to conduct research, teach, and work as an administrator. I changed my dissertation topic to accept the offer working for the Army. I collected lots of great empirical data for USMA and for my dissertation and I am enjoying the rewards of publishing several articles on the findings. I have also been invited as a speaker to discuss the results at many national and international conferences and symposia.
