Donna's Story

Life continues.... Here we go again with some changes. I'll keep the keep some of the "history" in case you're interested...if not, well, either keep scrolling down or keep on surfing.... Since graduation, I moved to Endicott with my then future husband, Jack Gragg. (Some may know him as an Army recruiter in Owego.) I attended SUNY Binghamton for two years until we moved to Niagara Falls, where I got a BS in Business at Buffalo State. In 1989, we moved to Bakersfield, CA, after Jack telling them he wanted to move "somewhere warm." Bakersfield is, with many 100 degree days; a few times the temperature has topped 110. The best thing is that it has snowed only twice in the 19 years I've lived here. After Jack retired from the Army, things got rough and we divorced in 1999. I married David Hays, a Bakersfield native in 2001. I got my Master's Degree in Social Work in June 2003 and will be working toward becoming a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. I continue to work full time as a supervisor for Kern County Child Protective Services, which has made the newspapers way too often. I know we are doing the job well (19 years of experience helps), but when it comes to abused or neglected children, everyone thinks they know how to do the job better. Things are ever changing with me, as I am now separated from my husband...(I suspect that I have a fatal flaw) and we share custody of our two wonderful dogs, Patti & Sam. Life is funny though; I am now back with my first true love, Brian Nolff. We dated a brief 2 months, more than 23 years ago (25 now) and managed to find each other again. He came all the way from Virginia, just to be with me; so now I know for sure...there is such a thing as "happily ever after." It hasn't been an easy time, but we ...Expand for more
lean on each other to make it through. So we finally got into a home, REO of course in August 09. It's got a pool (necessity here) and a great yard. New pictures will show that Patti & Sam now have "step-siblings" Chloe & Joey. I always said I'd have puppies instead of children. Whoever said that money can't buy happiness didn't consider the purchase of puppies from the pound! Know that I have never back down from the challenges of life. I am willing to sacrifice or fight to accomplish my goals and live my dreams. With that, my motto remains: "Well-behaved women rarely make history." -Laurel Thatcher-Ulrich Update 2/21/14: On February 19, 2014, my ex-husband, John Q. (Jack) Gragg took a nap and never awakened. Though no longer married, we stayed close, sharing dog stories & pictures regularly. Rest in Peace, Jack. Love never dies, this I know with all my heart. Update 11/22/17 Marrying Brian Nolff made me a stepmother, and in 2015. I became "Grandma" to an amazing little boy, Phoenix. Having never had children, this opened up a part of my heart that I never thought I would feel. After years of hearing the horror stories of children being abused and neglected, I had hardened myself. I am the luckiest, to have him in my life, and close to my heart. Update 1/4/19 In November 2017, it became obvious that Phoenix's mom had priorities other than him. We became his legal guardians in March 2018. If anyone told me 5 years ago that I would be raising a toddler, I would have called them absolutely crazy, but here we are. It's a daily challenge; he's all rambunctious boy, but we love him so much. Needless to say, the adventure continues. I'm now within 16 months of retiring (I will have 30 years). Looking forward to the changes it brings.
