Donna's Story

Life I started my life in Long Beach, CA. I attended Daniel Webster Elementary School from kindergarten through the sixth grade. I have many happy memories of there. Sports, crafts and learning to play the cello and learning how to dance. I also got to play in the all county orchestra. Being able to participate in the Maypole dances every year and dressing up like we were from different countries was fun. I was in the Brownies and Girl Scouts and I hated that. The simple reason was I am not a salesperson and I absolutely hated having to sell cookies and calendars. I did a lot of the schools art work and even would read books to the younger classes. I think my biggest moment was going to the mountains in the sixth grade and camping in cabins in the snow. That was in 1962. Now for a Southern California girl that was big stuff! I hated moving from there. I had lived in Long Beach all my life so that leaving my friends was like leaving my family. I may have been prissy but I loved playing volleyball, football and fighting with the boys. One day one of the boys mothers brought some bras to my house and told my mother she was tired of me 'bouncing' all over her sons! I was not ashamed but my mother was. I had been telling her for a year that I needed a bra. She told me I didn't because I was just a little girl. I guess that other mother didn't agree with her! I was also involved in sand art contests at the beach, Bible Education at school, library helper, afterschool sports and all city sports as a standing broad jumper. I liked the boys too but especially two of them, Johnny and Earl. But alas, I was too young. Later my family moved and I went to Havenscourt Jr. High School in Oakland, CA from the seventh to ninth grade. My orchestra teacher there was too smart. After having played cello in various orchestras in southern CA for three years Mr. Reed busted me. He found out I was playing by ear and I couldn't read a lick of music. He promptly put me in begining orchestra where I quickly learned how to read music. Boy was I humiliated. I'm still smarting from that one. I was a tutor for fifth and sixth graders in reading and math and I actually got paid for it by the Ford Foundation. I had some of the best teachers there because you could not fool them at all. At least I couldn't which made me a much better student. I also played in the school orchestra, all city and all county orchestra and in a quartet. I was a member of the YMCA travel club and we toured California during spring break. There I met my first 'real' boyfriend named Bill. Too much for my Dad I guess (Dads name is Bill also) because he moved us out in the country where there were no buses and I didn't know anyone at all in McColl, SC.There I went to McColl High School and quickly found out you could get a drivers license at 14 and since I was 15 I thought I'd been cheated. Without a license or a boyfriend you were dead in the water as there was no transportation there. Football ...Expand for more
games seemed a good place to meet boys and study hall. I'll add more to this later as right now I sound like I was a bit boy crazy. Oh, but there is so much more to tell. Especially about learning to be a proper southern lady. I know I desperately need to update this profile and I will soon. It is now July, 2007 and my stepmother has told me my life has now become full circle as I have moved back home to McColl. I'm not sure about that, but.......I'M BACK! I am raising my six year old granddaughter so I guess I'm in that game again also. I'll probably be the 'oldest' mother at McColl Elementary/Middle School so maybe that's what my stepmother meant. It is hard! Any tips for raising a child in the new millineum? Any tips would be greatly appreciated. More to come........Some of my friends in school were Terry Linton, Charlie Mae Williams,Ronnie Williams,Polly Ramsey and of course my high school sweetheart Donnie. I would love to hear from old friends and aquantinces. My current age is 59. When I was 12, I thought that people my age now would be dead. I was so completely clueless.. One of the things I did with Terry was go to the beach with her brother and some 26 year old guy Jerry brought along. Even now my parents would kill me at the very thought! My hero is my Aunt Honey. I had a very confusing and mixed up childhood but I could always depend on my aunt to lead me and guide me in the right direction. She was my oasis throughout everything and always tried to keep my mind on how much God loves us all. The one person from my past who I'd most like to see again is Bill Kressman, because he was so cool and driven to suceed dispite having a disease that was determined to end his life young.. I believed in happily ever after. But even though that dream didn't last I'm very surprised that I'm still very optimistic and happy and still look forward to the little things in life which mean so much. It's the little things that matter not your overblown dreams! My best friend would tell you I'm sweet, but people who don't know me very well would probably describe me as shy. In 10 years, I hope to be happily married. I'm going to get there by praying and hoping. Hope is eternal. It can also be a fairy tale dream. I hope my friends would remember me as friendly, helpfull, encouraging and always having a smile for them. I have lived in California, Maryland,Pennsylvania,Georgia, South Carolina and Okinawa Japan. My Dad was in the Navy so we traveled. Then I was married to a guy in the Air Force Which is why I lived in Okinawa. Living in a forein country will really make you appreciate this country. I remember getting off the plane in California as we were returning from Okinawa, I told my girls I was going to kiss the ground as soon as I stepped off the plane. They were totally convinced I would and as teenagers they were totally humiliated. Looking back I wish I had. But my girls were in such a state that only for them did I not follow through.
