Donna's Story

Life Still married to my high school sweetheart and very happy. Working part time with weight watchers, and with six grandchildren. Dewayne and I have three children, two girls, one boy. The last two, a girl and the boy, were twins and one of the biggest shocks of our lives. We now have four grandprinces ages sixteen, twelve, nine, and five. Two grandprincess (who are quite beautiful I must add)ages fourteen and seven years . Our youngest grandson has had nineteen brain surgeries due to an arachnoid cyst that was in the very center of his brain. He spend the month of June 09 in Sacred Heart with a MRSA infection, then in Aug. he had surgery that went terribly wrong and we came so close to losing him. A major artery was clipped and he came out of surgery in a coma. We spent 6 weeks at Shands in Gainesville and 2 weeks at Brooks Rehabilitation Hospital in Jacksonville. He has lost his short term memory, had definite physical disablitites, and cognitive damage, but is slowly recovering, however, we never know when he might have another shunt failure. The worse thing of all is we lost the happy little boy who loved playing hide and seek and loved kisses and hugs. We have a different little boy and we wouldn't trade him for anything. He will have the shunt for the rest of his life, therefore, all prayers are welcomed. 3/9/11 Update on Dylan: He has developed slit ventricle syndrome which makes it very difficult to diagnos a shunt failure and comes with a host of other issues. We just ask that he stay covered in prayer. We now have only one Siamese cat, Moses, and one dog, a boxer named Maddie Waggs who helped us climb out of the deep dark place Dylan's illnesses and surgical complications led us. Our oldest daughter with four of the grands live about 1/2 mile from us as the crow flies. She has a full load with working out of her home with Appletree Communications and running a house with four children, dealing with a sick child, and trying to get their house rebuilt after a Dec 08 fire. She is a strong woman! She has just completed her R.N. degree, however, we missed her pinning because Dylan was back at Shands having more brain surgery. Our youngest daughter, with two of the grandsons, lives in McComb, Ohio where her husband works for Cooper Tires and she is involved with her farm,. She has several cats (mice in the barn) ,two dogs, one baby donkey, three adult donkeys, chickens, bunnies, duck, geese, and I have no idea what else Our son was in the USN (third generation Ulrich) andwas a CTI, meaning someth...Expand for more
ing about intelligence. He graduated with top honors from Military Defense Language School in Monterey, CA with Russian as his language. He spent two back to back tours in Afghanistan. He is now out of the Navy and is back in Pensacola working on another degree and has plans to go to med school. Dewayne is gone a lot. Always has been as he spent 26 years in the Navy. He flies for Delta Air Lines, so if you need to fly, fly Delta. As for me, I keep the home fires burning, entertain the cats, dog, babysit the granddarlings, and work for Weight Watchers of South Alabama and Northwest Florida. We will be married 41 (good heavens, that long?) years in April. In some ways it seems like yesterday, in others, a lifetime ago. College Actually, I went back the first time in 1978 in Va. Beach, VA. My husband was at sea and with three children, four years and two years, it was a bit difficult. I started back in 1990 when we finally got somewhere we could settle and it wouldn't cost an arm and a leg. I am one class short of an AA but what I discovered is...I like taking classes, but I much prefer to be a stay at home Mom, Grandmother, and Wife. My job with WW is part time and flexable and just what is needed to be available when my husband is home. And "...as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord." In our darkest hours, God's grace was sufficient for us. We couldn't have handled it without Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior. While I ask for your prayers, I will gladly and humbly pray for you and yours. God bless you all. Oct.26, 2012 We have just returned from a three week hospitalization for Dylan. In Sept he had back to back surgeries for shunt failures. His shunt was totally removed and replaced twice in two days. After being there a week we returned home. He looked terrible and on Sat. Sept 29 we made a very fast trip back where he was immediately admitted and on Sun morning he was once again taken into the OR and his entire shunt mechanism removed and sent to the PICU with an external catheter in his brain. He had developed an infection called Seratia. After three weeks and four surgeries later we are finally back home. For those who remember Dianne Madden Mallini, she and her husband Tom are lifesavers. Their hospitality is astounding! They allowed us to stay in their beautiful home, again. Dianne is just as beautiful as she ever was, and just as beautiful on the outside as she is on the inside! And her precious husband, God love him, is very generous and welcoming! Donna Joiner Ulrich
