Donna's Story

Life Life, it keeps us busy, doesn't it? Let's see -- I'm raising two incredible sons (okay, one is really already raised but he'll always be my baby), living in Nashville, struggling to make it as a writer, traveling when I can and enjoying it all. Jonathan, my older son, graduated Magna Cum Laude from MTSU in 2006 with a BS in Mass Communications. He's now in Portland, Ore., for graduate school, a Masters in Public Administration. I miss my nerd because he's the best beer drinking companion a mother could have. (I know that sounds odd, but you should see us drink beer together in our own nerdy way. It's quite hilarious!) Jordan, my younger son, ah, he's the one I fear. He's currently plotting the overthrow of the free world in order to release teenagers from parental tyranny, and in high school at the same time. There's definitely more than one reason I call this one my Demonic Spawn. While the older son is gifted mathematically, the younger one is gifted musically. He plays trombone in the McGavock High School marching band as well as the guitar, a little drums and a smidgen of mandolin and keyboards. School Some of my memories: the CGM; being forced into garbage cans in the locker rooms, sort of; movies in the auditorium; Ms. Ivey's Sr. English class (thanks!); "What'll ya give me for a nickel?"; Clint's smile; Bill's Duster (my first and only drag race -- I won!); missing the second semester of our Junior year with Rheumatic Fever; and so much more. College I loved TTU. Started off majoring in Accounting and ended up in Management Information Systems. Now I'm furthering my writing career. Isn't it amazing how life happens? But I do want to thank Dr. Marilyn Brinker, who encouraged me to write after reading some of my assignments. Her class was incredible. Work I just finished a 12-year stint as a Producer with CMT, and now I'm working on my writing. I've been fortunate to have a few of my poems, essays and articles published in the past, and currently I'm fortunate to write about two of my favorite things for Examiner.com -- beer and ghosts. You can check out my columns at NashvilleBeer.com and NashvilleGhost.com. I've got a tentative two-book deal with a publisher, and I'm enjoying traveling and doing the research to complete them and get them out to the world. Just Stuff I always wanted to be a firefighter when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a bad idea idea. As it turns out, they were sort of right because I'm just w...Expand for more
ay too short. The wildest thing I ever did in school -- hmm ... did I ever do anything wild then? I really was a shy little nerd. Goodness, look at me now -- I have SO changed! Obsessions -- ghosts and paranormal investigation! Man, do I love that, and I've travelled a bit for investigations. In fact, I drove all the Iowa to sleep in the Villisca Axe Murder House. You guys didn't know I was that weird, did you? But it's worked out for me since that's the topic of one of my books -- a paranormal travel guide. Life doesn't always turn out the way you expect it. I guess my biggest surprise has been my health. Basically, it sucks. By the age of 40 I'd already had a stroke and open heart surgery, two things most people don't experience until much later in life, if at all. My body has changed due to illness and all of the associated medications, and I don't even know myself sometimes now. There are times I get down about it and wish I could be like I was, but I can't, so I just plod along, making the best of the days I have left, which are pretty darned good most of the time. My current age is 46. When I was 12, I thought that people my age now would be in an old folks home. I was so completely wrong. I'm not sure I'd want to be 12 again. I really enjoy life. What happened to my first crush? I guess I was three and that was Paul Baby. My first boyfriend came in elementary school -- Timmy Mason, and my first high school crush was Joe Garman. He was a football player, and he had the locker next to mine my sophomore year. I guess he was a senior? I wonder where they all are now? I share my home with the Hounds of Hell, who are ALWAYS up to no good in some way. Titan is a Weimaraner with separation anxiety -- a total lap dog when it storms, and Brighid is my little diva of a Corgi. Then there's Simon, my Betta fish. Wow -- one do over. Maybe one more date with Clint Chapman. While Joe was my first high school crush, I guess Clint was my first high school love. I still miss him. In 10 years, I hope to be alive and kicking. I'm going to get there by taking care of myself and hoping for one more miracle. What about me would surprise everyone at a reunion? That would definitely be my weight. I was uber-skinny in high school, but I'm sure not that way now. Steroids and medications have a way of doing that to a girl. Plus, I think my personality would shock a few. I'm not so shy and quiet these days. So -- here's me. What about you?
