Donna's Story

Hello, Everyone -- I'm going to give this "Story Wizard" a try. No telling how this will come out, but here goes . . . . Question 1 asks how I hope old friends remember me. The only answer to that would be "kindly". Having been brought up to "speak only when spoken to", being in a classroom with lots of .out-going kids was really intimidating, and I was pretty quiet. Question 2 asks about what I wanted to be when grown. Growing up, I always wanted to be a stay-at-home wife and mom with lots of kids -- just like on TV. My family and friends thought that was a good idea. As it turns out, they were wrong. Welcome to the real world! After Wendy Gayle and Misty Dawn were born, I realized the only way they would have the chances in life I wanted for them was for me to go back to work. Now, they are grown with babies of their own, and I have just retired to beautiful northern Alabama with my wonderful husband of 32 years. Question 3 asks how I like to relax. When life gets hectic, I like to spend time with my husband and three American Bulldogs gardening, fishing, playing in the yard, going for walks or drives, etc. Carl and I are both calm and easy-going, and the bulldogs are such clowns that we spend a lot of time smiling and laughing together. Question #4 asks about the wildest thing I ever did in shcool. I was pretty prim and proper in school and very quiet, one of those dull kids who followed all the rules and made great grades and let anyone copy my answers if they needed help on a test. Can't think of anything wild I ever did. I don't think "wild" was in the rules. I'm still not into doing wild things, but I am always ready to try something new and always ready to go. Carl and I have lots of fun together. Question #9 asks about my obsessions. I can't think of any obsessions in my life except my puppies, the smallest of which is 103#. Carl and I adore our American Bulldogs who share our home and cars and don't like being outside unless we are with them. All three puppies love traveling and staying in motels. Prior to these three guys, we had a one-of-a-kind American Pitbull Terrier named Honey Bee and a rescued wolf-chow mix who recognized no name except "wolf" so we named him Mr. Wolf. When my girls were little, we got our first Pitbull named Sugar Babe, and she quickly adopted every kid in the neighborhood. Many little ones learned to walk hanging on to her broad back (at 110 lbs., she was a big girl), and weekly slumber parties were generally at our house so Sugar Babe could attend. She even had her own sleeping bag with little brown bears on it. All the neighborhood kids loved Sugar Babe growing up and still talk about her when they get together. Obviously, there will always be at least one bulldog in my life, and probably more than one. In response to question #10, I think my biggest surprise is how much fun being married can be. After all the effort I put into an earlier marriage of 14 years, I really wasn't sure I wanted to try it again. But, thank goodness, I did! Carl and I have been married 32 years and still love being tog...Expand for more
ether. When we are together, everything is fun, and no problem is too big to vanquish. Best friends for life. Question #11 wants to know how we could improve our home. I can't think of anything I would want to change, other than making it self-cleaning. We are living in the heavily wooded hills of Alabama at the very end of a half-mile, one-lane county road. It is so beautiful here! Question #12 asks what I've learned from my kids. The only thing I can think of is that I've learned I did a good job turning them into wonderful, loving, giving, responsible adults who have taught their kids the same values they were taught. I am so proud of both of my girls and my grandchildren. My oldest daughter lives in Dallas with her husband. She heads a team that creates computer programs for financial institutions and trains bank employees to use the programs. She and her husband are also musicians and play in their church orchestra. My youngest daughter and her husband pastor a small Pentecostal Church in Alabama. They have three children who have been thoroughly involved in church life since birth. My grandkids are well-adjusted, sweet, somewhat old-fashioned kids proud of their Christian heritage. Amazingly, they remind me of the kids I grew up with, and that's truly a blessing! Question #19 asked about my first crush. That would be a young man named Joe Demmick who liked to hold my hand in 1st grade. He used to bring me jewelry out of his mother's jewelry box. Then, one day, just before we went into 2nd grade, I saw him kiss a girl while standing in line to go to the library. And that was the end of my first crush. I've often wondered if his mother ever found out where her junk jewelry was going. Question #20. My best friend would tell you I'm a nut, but people who don't know me very well would probably describe me as dignified. Has anyone ever know a truly dignified Aquarian? I doubt it. Question #25 says I get one do-over and asks what I would do differently. I chose one do-over, wrote about it, then realized one is not nearly enough and "un-wrote" it. Guess I'm just going to have to live with my many mistakes and hope I've learned something from each one. I think I have, but how do I know for sure? Question #26 asks about 10 years from now. In 10 years, it will be 2022 and I will be 77 and hope to be of sound body and mind. I'm going to get there by working hard, loving and enjoying life. Like most of you, I still can't believe I'm 67 years old. I really can't believe I'll be 77 in just 10 years. Question #28 asks what about me would surprise everyone at my high school reunion. I doubt many from my graduating class even remember me. If they do, they would probably be surprised that I am no longer quiet. I still tend to be soft-spoken, but a little bit nutty and always ready for fun. Well, I guess that's it -- my life in a nutshell. But it's a very happy, caring, comfortable nutshell, and that's what counts. If anyone does remember me, please stop and say "hi". I would love to hear from you. Hugs to all of you -- Donna Miller Hudspeth
